We stayed for 2 nights while on a road trip this summer, and they have done a fabulous job of refurbishing the hotel. The Indigenous art, decor is beautiful in the lobby as well as in the room. The room was extremely clean and the bathroom toiletries were local and high quality which was a nice touch - as was the Spirit Bear coffee in the room. Our room was on the second floor facing the back, and we found the room to be quiet even though the hotel was at full capacity. We'd recommend requesting a room on the top floors - it was nice to be able to look out at the trees instead of the parking lot (which would be the case for 1st floor rooms). We ate at the pub for dinners and breakfasts and the food was excellent and fairly priced. The Kwa'Lilas Fish Fry was our favourite - but everything was delicious and generous portions. Service was excellent, and the outdoor patio was great. Lots of options for breakfast - but we loved having the fry bread! We found all the staff to be extremely helpful and friendly - in the hotel as well as in the restaurant. There was a coffee shop in the lobby which was handy for grabbing a morning coffee and pastry. The hotel is just around the corner from Save-on-Foods grocery store, so it was handy to pick up anything we needed. Compared to the prices of other hotels on Vancouver Island this summer when availability was at an all-time premium, the price was definitely fair. Parking was free and very easy - lots of space. This was hands down the nicest hotel in the Port Hardy area, and we will definitely be back.
Lots to like but also some room for improvement
I stayed two nights and would happily return. I'm a big believer in supporting economic development projects in First Nations communities and chose this hotel for that reason. (Plus it looks like the nicest place in Port Hardy...) Although I planned my trip six months in advance, they were almost fully booked in mid-August. As a result, I was assigned an accessible room on the first floor close to the lobby. It was convenient but there was no view. Also, it could use a little more soundproofing. I could hear people talking as they walked to their rooms and the folks in the room next to me got up at 4:30 am, probably to go fishing or catch a ferry. It's great to see Indigenous-sourced products, like Mother Earth Essentials toiletries and Spirit Bear coffee. The main restaurant was closed for renovations so I had dinner (a mediocre rice bowl with salmon) and breakfast (a fantastic poached egg plus frybread with maple butter) in the pub. The rooms are large and well appointed, the beds are very comfortable, and the coffee shop is a great option for interesting coffees and teas plus freshly baked pastries. The cheddar scones are fantastic. I really wanted to like the food served at the pub more but...other options for food are the Market Street Cafe for breakfast or lunch and The Sporty for dinner.
Service could have been better
We stayed here two nights. It was a miserable stay for us. It wasn’t the fault of the hotel but I wish they could be more helpful and sympathetic to our misfortune. We arrived at around 6pm and the pub was closed due to some kitchen incidence. They were not particularly helpful in recommending any eating places. They gave us a list but most places were closed. The next day we had a flat tire while almost reaching San Josef Bay. Gravel road, no cellphone service… After changing to spare tire we had a very stressful drive back to the hotel, in case we have a second flat tire. I strongly discourage the drive to San Josef Bay - we have a four wheel drive and the road is really very bad not just from Holberg but almost all the way from Port Hardy. We had an organized trip to Farewell Harbour Lodge the next day so was very worried if we couldn’t change our tire and would miss the trip. It was a Sunday, nothing opened and the reception made no effort to help us despite us telling them our concerns. At the end it was Farewell Harbour Lodge who helped us to get a shuttle to Alert Bay for the next morning. Room was comfy, the air con was very loud but powerful for a cool night sleep. Our room has a nice shower, no bathtub which is perfect for us. Room is spacious and clean. The old fashion key can not be kept next to the phone. All in all a good place to stay if you are in Port Hardy, I just wish they could be more helpful.
Overpriced but not many options
It's essentially a simple, clean motel. We were disappointed after paying so much, but honestly there's not many options in town. It was very clean and had the basic requirements. If visiting again we'd likely stay at one of the cabins outside of town.
First visit in Port Hardy
Very impressive artwork and decor both in the bedrooms and foyer; the staff explained the meaning of the copper mural artwork on the wall and that it was guided by the elders of the tribe, each panel having its own story A warm friendly atmosphere. Excellent caring staff...
