Best trip ever
This was a once in a lifetime trip, we went hoping to see grizzly bears in their natural habitat and we were not disappointed, the lodge was very isolated no phone no internet no hairdryer this was the most relaxing place I've ever been to. We went out in small boats to where the bears were situated, we were wined and dined nothing was too much bother for the staff and owners and although I've said it was a once in a lifetime trip I would love to return.
I had the most amazing time and was tearful when I had to leave! The seaplane trip into the lodge is out of this world, flying over the most spectacular scenery. The lodge itself is situated in what I can only describe as paradise. I had to keep pinching myself at the views from my bedroom window. The owners, guides and staff are amazing. The guides are hugely knowledgeable and their passion for what they do is infectious. The food is out of this world! And finally, the wildlife did not disappoint. As it was Oct, there was an abundance of grizzly bears fishing for salmon. We saw so many cubs and at one point, grizzlies were walking right past us which was a jaw-dropping moment. We were lucky to have a humpback whale visit by the lodge plus seals. The lodge provides binoculars, thermal clothing and wet weather gear which was great - they really have thought of everything, including seated pads for when watching the bears which were much appreciated. I really cannot thank Great Bear Lodge enough for a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will remember always.
Astounding place, fantastic staff and highly recommended
My wife and I went to the Great Bear Lodge and can say it was worth every penny. Everything from the flight in, to the food and from the friendly and attentive staff to - of course - the bear viewing. We saw whales from the lodge every day and were fortunate enough to see a large number of bears both from the boats and platforms. Watching them completely at ease just going about their business and chasing salmon was brilliant. I know it is an expensive trip and we were clearly lucky both with the number of bears we saw and the weather, but we both think it is worth every penny. All the staff - to a person - are friendly, engaging and all of them informative.
Best Adventure Travel Company I've Ever Experienced
From my first contact with this company, to our hugs goodbye, this was the most responsive, organized, and luxurious adventure company I've ever dealt with. These people are passionate about their work and, after decades to experience, have it completely dialed in. The adventure began with a 50-minute flight in a colorfully painted and expertly piloted 1942 Grumman Goose amphibious plane. As we de-planed at the lodge, co-owner Marg Lehane stood at the doorway of the plane and introduced herself to each and every one of our 17 passengers. Although she was surrounded by abundant and highly competent staff, Marg was on-site and hands-on throughout the tour. She was delightful in every way. The food was delicious and the accommodations luxurious beyond expectations for a floating lodge that is completely remote from any modern infrastructure or conveniences. Mid-September proved to be the optimal time to see, photograph and learn about numerous Grizzly Bears (included at least two sets of cubs) gorging themselves on salmon in preparation for their winter hibernation. It was an unforgettable experience that will live on in the many photos and videos I captured while I was there. Well worth the wait and the cost.
Once in a lifetime experience you simply MUST do!
OMG where to start! You only need to bring your personal items and underclothes & shirts and shorts in your soft bag - outer clothes are all provided (puffer suit, scarves, beanies, gloves, gum boots, binoculars, wet-weather gear). 5star all the way - we flew to the floating lodge in a goose (what an amazing experience!) from Port Hardy. We were warmly greeted by Tom and Marg and all their staff, including their beautiful Labradoodle! Location explained and Safety briefing explained (you are in the wilderness). All meals are provided (absolutely wanted for nothing, first class meals) and wet bar including scrumptious morning and afternoon teas. Maximum guests number 16 - there were 10 on our trip. By the end of the first nightin your ensuited king bedroom - you feel very relaxed, breathing in the pristine air and digesting the beauty from either your bedroom window, lounge room (plenty of books to read on nature). You are free to relax on the deck, walk to the other end of the lodge for you to absorb such beauty on your own if you prefer. You go out in your gear for most of the day, only broken by returning for freshly prepared lunch. Despite all that sitting the boat, time goes quickly. The guides are very experienced and once the motors are cut, do quite a lot of rowing to follow the wildlife. We saw numerous bald eagles (one caught a salmon in the middle of the river which then swam with his catch to the banks), blue herons, seals, many beautiful hummingbirds eating at feeders around the perimeter of the lodge and of course, bears. The salmon had not commenced their run upriver - there were some just resting in the river. We watched Joy and her twin cubs, she then fed them in front of us (guides had never seen her do this previously - so we knew what we were witnessing was very special! Guides had their cameras out too!) It was so lovely to see humans respect wild animals and the passion Tom, Marg, Blakeley, Nigel, Taylor, Sabrina, Lena, Hannah & Rafe all showed and share with us. We all felt very privileged to be in their world. None of the guests wanted to leave when the float planes arrived to return us to Port Hardy. Thank you all for such a memorable start to my 50th birthday celebrations! PS. Taylor, my son loved your card and note you wrote him!
