Into the wild : Everyday a new adventure
To get to Farewell Harbour Lodge I had to drive to Alder Bay RV Marina Park. After arrival I could park my car in a safe spot and leave the keys behind with one of the lodge staff members. He then carried my luggage onto a small motor boat and we left for our new adventure at Farewell Harbour lodge The lodge is situated at Berry Island. A remote and very special place surrounded by an archipelago of islands. Here you will see bears in their natural habitat, searching for food along the shores. Whales, orca’s and other marine mammals have the sea as their playground here. The waters are so full of life, it is going to be almost impossible to not see the beautiful marine wildlife here. When I arrived at the lodge the owner Tim Mr. Grady, his family and his staff were waiting for us at the dock and made me feel welcome right away. I was going to be staying at the lodge for 4 days. After saving all my money for the last 2.5 years I couldn’t wait to start exploring this beautiful environment. The lodge really lets you connect with nature by taking you on daily tours. I experienced a new adventure every time I was taken out at sea in comfortable boats. Safety was high on their priority list, and it was really fun to learn the safety instructions by heart, doing a safety quiz. During our daily tour I we were given all the time in the world to photograph every single encounter with wildlife. The lodge itself gives you a warm homely feeling. From the moment you arrive at the lodge you are considered part of the family, as long as you treat everybody there as yours. The staff is nothing less than wonderful and will go out of their way to give you your experience of a lifetime. The main lodge has a little bar and you can sit on a comfortable couch in front of a fireplace. Breakfast and dinner are served in the main lodge every day. The view from the lodge and from my room (nr. 12) was spectacular. Seeing the beautiful sunset and calm waters was relaxing and so very peaceful. My room was absolutely clean and the large king bed was very comfortable. The room also has a heater like a small fireplace, which gave the room a cozy feeling and keeps you warm at the same time. The room has WI-FI, but who needs that? In a place like this you should turn of your phone or laptop and just enjoy the possibility of being away from your hectic life for a while. The mornings are especially beautiful with the mountains covered in blankets of fog. The food (breakfast, lunch and dinner were included) was incredible and prepared with love and attention! The salads, fish, egg rolls and dessert were delicious. And it was fun to hand Matt his favorite blue ribbon beer as a surprise. One night Duck was on the menu, but that is something I do not like to eat. I felt very uncomfortable asking Kelly for an alternative on such short notice, but Mrs. Mc Grady was very nice, and told me it wasn’t a problem at all. She arranged something else for me to eat right away. I was so very grateful that she didn’t feel like I insulted the chef and made sure I got a lovely curry to eat. Again, thank you so much for understanding! I loved Marly and A.J. as our tour guides. Marlie is a like sunshine, just being herself, she makes you smile all the time. You could see how much she enjoyed doing these tours, and she had so much knowledge. I loved the 60 & 70 music being played on our boat, while returning to the lodge. I loved how James went out of his way to search for bears on our bear walk tour and how he was able to walk bare foot all day, and even being in the cold waters. After every daily tour the staff evaluates with Tim an in the evening after dinner the staff will inform their guest about the activities of the next day. If you are interested in doing some extra activities around the lodge, the owner will be happy to assist you any way possible. At the lodge there are raincoats and wellies available that you can use, as the weather is always unpredictable. During my stay I have seen grizzly bears, a black bear mom with cups, feeding whales, orca families, jumping dolphins and so much more. Seeing the orcas for the first time in my life was so amazing and special to me that it made me tear up. Seeing the grizzly bears and mom bear with cups was the icing on the cake! It really was the dream trip I had been hoping for in the last 2 years. Every minute spent in this remote environment felt so special to me. Make sure you bring a zoom camera with you (300 to 400 mm is advisable), sufficient batteries and memory card. Keep your camera ready all the time because the wild life is going to be around you at any time. I recommend this place to everyone who wants to connect with nature and wants to go into the wild.
You won't want to say Farewell...
Farewell Harbour gets so many perfect reviews because that's exactly what it is. The accommodation, food and setting are all just fabulous but it's the staff that set it apart. Their passion and knowledge, combined with fun, made it a never to be forgotten holiday. The wildlife viewing was spectacular and the staff know how to get you to the heart of the action... it was personal and jaw-dropping but at the same time felt very safe while always respecting nature. The bear trips were amazing and on one incredible journey back to the lodge Blackfish Sound treated us to an incredible explosion of marine life with Orcas, humpbacks and seabirds all around our boat... none of us on board knew which way to look. PS Tell Tanis I may well be back next year to do the washing up... if the job's still open!
Trip of a life time
This place is just amazing. Staff and guides very friendly and knowledgable. Wildlife and scenery were well above expectations.the whole experience from start to finish was brilliant .saw black bears and grizzly bears ,sea lions and a bonus we saw dolphins also saw humpback whales .
Amazing wildlife experience
I cannot recommend this lodge highly enough. The lodge is beautiful, the food excellent and all the staff are warm, welcoming and friendly. Everyone is passionate about the welfare of the animals and environment. We saw black bears, grizzly bears, humpback whales, orcas, dolphins, sea lions, as well as bald eagles and many more birds. We stayed in one of the “float” rooms with wonderful views over the inlet, the rooms are simply furnished but cosy and in keeping with the lodges environmental ethos.
Wonderful place; wonderful people and amazing nature to see
Very well organised and set up lodge with numerous options to see whales, bears as well as sealions, birdlife and forests.
