A cultural paradise
We went to Fogo not really knowing much about Newfoundland and its unique culture. We left with a sense of understanding about the cod fish, the stages, the island architecture, boat building, the importance and proliferation of berries, the wonderful hiking and the falling in with locals to chat about local history and so many handfuls of fat wild blueberries on those hikes. The delicious food, the charming rooms, the molasses with fresh bread and butter, well you just need to experience it for yourself. 4 nights flew by.
Exceptional, you have to experience yourself
Fogo Island Inn is beyond an inn, it is a great heart behind the 'making'. A passion to bring business and talent back to the community. The staff attended to every detail that you requested and tried every effort to make your stay enjoyable. No need to rush, take your time to enjoy. From an early morning coffee and muffin at your door step, to a full breakfast in preparation for the activities during the day, and a relaxed and sunset view of dinner. All are very thoughtfully designed.
Great stay at Fogo Island Inn
The Inn is all inclusive plan with most activities and meals included. Our room which faced the water was comfortable and well equipped with free wifi, robes, amenities and a breakfast basket delivered to the room every morning. Fine dining at the Inn for lunch or dinner is very good. During our stay the chef hailed from a five star Toronto restaurant. Fresh quality locally sourced food is artfully presented in a room with majestic water views. Service is gracious and professional. Although you can dine exclusively at the Inn, you may also dine in one of the locally owned restaurants on the island. The option to dine in town offers guest the opportunity to sample some hearty local fare. We had a rental car which gave us the opportunity to explore the island at our own pace with stops at many local points of interest. We drove on all the island's main roads during our stay. We enjoyed hikes to the Great Auk and Brimstone Head, the latter is purported to be one of the 4 corners of the Flat Earth. Who knew people believe the Earth is flat? We relaxed on unspoiled beaches, walked along the many nature trails and explored the rugged landscape on foot dotted with fishing sheds and Artist Studios. The highlight of our stay was a breathtaking tour to the islands located more than 5 miles offshore to see the Puffin colonies. The small group tour to see the native habitat of these rare birds along the shores of Little Fogo Islands was amazing. The Captain and crew of the Island Explorer were both professional and knowledgeable. A huge thank you to Sandra who made the arrangements. A wonderful stay, delicious food and great service.
Beautiful experience. Beautiful inn. Beautiful food. Beautiful people
We arrived at Gandor airport and were whisked away on a private helicopter to Fogo Island Inn ; an amazing beginning to six days of luxury mixed with some road trips, swimming and hiking. All staff and islanders were so welcoming that we felt like family. Our community host Eugene was available for a short tour to a long island tour. Six hours was not to long and we learned so much from him. Our room was beautiful with a view of the ocean. Sleep was deep with the fresh ocean air blowing in our window. The food at the inn was beyond delicious and intriguing- locally sourced. We enjoyed the unique cocktails at the bar and met many interesting guests. Five nights was not too long to stay at Fogo Island Inn.
A one-of-a-kind, exceptional experience
Absolutely phenomenal! Attention to detail incredible, location and setting amazing, food superb, with an outstanding chef. Clearly deserves a rating in the top 10 hotels in the world. Is extremely expensive, but everything is included (except alcohol - and it was a little disappointing to be charged extra for glasses of wine in this setting). Gave us a unique perspective on the island and the people living there.
