An edge-of-the-Atlantic inn with ultra-modern architecture and minimalist interior style.
Fogo Island is one of those incredible special places that feels a world away from anywhere. It’s perched on a rocky outcrop at the edge of a continent; it’s next stop Greenland which sits on the other side of the Labrador Sea. While you might want to spend all your time relaxing in the cosy, colour-splashed lounge gazing through the floor-to-ceiling windows at the wild world outside, a stay here is all about getting out there. Each season (there’s seven of them here, from spring around to ‘pack ice’ through ‘berry’ and late autumn) there’s so much to do. In the spring you can hike, join geology tours and lean how boats are built and in trap berth season (June) you can watch icebergs drift past the shore. Go ocean swimming and then get warm around the bonfire in the summer, pick berries in September and October and go ice skating and caribou watching in the winter.
After day a day of island explorations, there’s nothing quite like returning to your room or suite. They all have incredible ocean views from their floor-to-ceiling windows and a comfy bed and sitting area. There are Labrador Rooms which are simple yet cosy and the more spacious Newfoundland Rooms which also have a wood-burning stove. We love the Fogo Island Suites which are located at the corners of the buildings; you’ll feel surrounded by nature as you soak in the bathtub or sit in the rocking chair. If you are travelling with children, opt for the 4-person Fogo Island Family Suite which has a living area with another king-size bed.
There’s a huge respect for both the social and natural environment at Fogo Island Inn. Protecting and revitalising the island’s small community and their unique culture, using ethical suppliers and sourcing as much produce as they can either from the island – or at least the province – are just a handful of the things that they do here.
