Deer Lodge, Lake Louise Deer Lodge, Lake Louise 3

Deer Lodge, Lake Louise

Opened in the 1920s, Deer Lodge is a traditional Rockies retreat just as you had imagined it. You will be a short walk from the shores of Lake Louise and a number of mountain hiking trails. Seasonal activities in the local area include hiking, canoeing, white water rafting, and a winter wonderland of sleigh rides around the lake, dog sledding and cross-country skiing. In the evenings, relax by the stone fireplace or gaze at the stars from the outdoor rooftop hot tub. The excellent Mount Fairview Dining Room serves Rocky Mountain Cuisine, with its roots in the Victorian rail and Swiss and Austrian mountain guides’ cooking. You’ll find smoked, cured or roasted game, fresh berries, wild fruits, vegetables, mushrooms and mixed grains alongside an award-winning wine list. The casual Caribou Lounge, with magnificent views of the Victoria Glacier, is an excellent spot for afternoon tea or light meals. With just 71 sensitively decorated rooms, Deer Lodge is characterised by a respect for the past and a sense of escape from the modern world. All have telephones but none have televisions, to better facilitate your relaxation. The original Tower Rooms were renovated to the specifications of the Historical Society and have retained their original cast iron radiators, woodwork, lighting and brass fixtures.

Fox Hotel & Suites, Banff Fox Hotel & Suites, Banff 4

Fox Hotel & Suites, Banff

A quiet retreat, the Fox Hotel is located on Banff Avenue with Banff town centre just three blocks away (to which the hotel operates a complimentary evening shuttle service). This is the perfect choice if you want a wilderness adventure yet don’t want to be too far from the centre of town. At Chili's restaurant you can enjoy the complimentary continental buffet breakfast. Later in the day, wholesome all-American classics with big bold flavours are served. The Margarita Bar is the ideal place for an aperitif or some après ski whilst taking in the views or watching the game. There's also a fitness room and the showpiece Cave & Basin hot pool is a real favourite with guests, great on a crisp winters evening.

Pyramid Resort, Jasper Pyramid Resort, Jasper 3

Pyramid Resort, Jasper

The Pyramid Lake Resort is a traditional chalet-style property set just across a quiet lane from the tranquil Pyramid Lake. With a setting such as this it would be a shame not to spend some of your time on the water. Rowing boats, canoes, kayaks and paddle boats can all be rented here. There are plenty of hiking and biking trails nearby, and the rest of Jasper National Park, as well as the resort town, is within easy reach by car.

Sawridge Inn, Jasper Sawridge Inn, Jasper 3.5

Sawridge Inn, Jasper

Nestled on the outskirts of the pretty town of Jasper, this friendly inn is just a ten minute walk from the main shops and restaurants. Facilities include the Mountain Wellness Day Spa, fitness centre, sauna and eucalyptus steam room, and an indoor heated pool with Jacuzzi. The beautiful natural landscapes of Jasper National Park are right on your doorstep with highlights including the stunning Maligne Lake, the Athabasca Falls and the Columbia Icefield.

The Fairmont Banff Springs The Fairmont Banff Springs 5

The Fairmont Banff Springs

The historic Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel is the Grande Dame of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. It's over one hundred years old and has a unique Scottish baronial style and regal opulence and elegance that's difficult to match. This is a deluxe hotel in every sense and it has a natural setting that's almost unrivalled. While it may be hard to tear yourself away from the award-winning Willow Stream Spa or the numerous restaurants and bars, the outdoor world awaits you. You'll be at the heart of breathtaking Banff National Park, which you can explore independently or by joining one of the many optional excursions on offer. Depending on the season, you can go hiking, mountain biking or river rafting, play golf, dog sledding or take part in downhill or cross country skiing. The rooms and suites are cosy and comfortable, exactly what you would require from a stay in the mountains. While the small Fairmont Rooms are a good value choice, however we highly recommend opting for a room with a mountain view. The Fairmont Mountainview Rooms and more-spacious Deluxe Mountainview Rooms are well worth the upgrade.

Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise 5

Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise

Welcome to Canada's most iconic hotel. The one that sits at the top of many people's 'must stay' bucket lists and has graced more magazine covers than we can count. It's not hard to see why it is so popular. It sits at the edge of the beautiful Lake Louise – a body of water that's turquoise in the summer and iced over throughout the winter and early spring – and is dwarfed by its surrounding mountain landscapes which seem almost unreal. As well as its unbeatable natural setting, the hotel also has a rich history and heritage as the hotel has welcomed mountaineers, outdoor adventurers, sightseers and even royalty through its doors since 1890. While the wider National Park has its attractions, the chateau is a destination in itself whether you're here to climb, hike, bike or head onto the water. If you don't want to venture out into the wilderness alone, you can join a guided half- or full-day hike or join a voyager canoe experience out on the lake. Although the hotel was opened primarily as a summer retreat, a visit during the winter is highly recommended as you can ski, ice climb, snow shoe or skate. For 10 days every January the much-loved Ice Magic Festival comes to town and attracts the world's best ice carvers who come here to create works of art in the ice and compete in the prestigious Canada Cup of Ice Carving. If all this activity sounds a little too much for you (or you need a post-activity indulgence) there's a tranquil spa on site. The Hiker's Foot Therapy is definitely a must following a few hours out on the trails. If there's anywhere in the world where upgrading to a room with a view is an absolute must it's here. While the Fairmont Rooms and Fairmont Mountainview Rooms are both a comfortable choice, nothing beats being greeted with a view of the lake as you draw back the curtains each morning. It's no surprise that these rooms and suites are the first to get booked up so be sure to book far in advance to avoid dissapointment.

Buffalo Mountain Lodge, Banff Buffalo Mountain Lodge, Banff 4

Buffalo Mountain Lodge, Banff

This is an authentic, well-crafted lodge nestled amongst the forests beneath the imposing ‘Sleeping Buffalo’ Mountain, located approximately a 15 minute walk from central Banff. Elegant design and genuine warmth and hospitality await you here. Dine in either of the two restaurants which utilise the finest local produce and relax in the cosy and comfortable lounge which features a log fire. There are two restaurants where the finest locally sourced smoked, cured and roasted wild game, wild fruits, vegetables and mushrooms are served. At The Sleeping Buffalo you can enjoy superb contemporary Canadian cuisine while the boutique Cilantro’s there's quality hand-crafted Italian dishes on the menu. There's also a comfortable lounge with log-fire, ideal for relaxing with a drink and also a large outdoor hot tub.

Coast Canmore Coast Canmore 4

Coast Canmore

This cosy and good-value Canmore hotel is the perfect alternative for those seeking a spot away from the bustle of Banff. You’ll still be within very easy reach of the entrance to the national park, and, if needed, there’s a quick and convenient public transport system between the two mountain towns. At the hotel itself, there’s an indoor swimming pool and whirlpool bath and a fitness centre, although with plenty of outdoor adventures available both on the doorstep and further afield, we are not sure you will need it. There’s also a restaurant, Table Food + Drink, a well thought of Canmore restaurant which serves mouthwatering dishes at breakfast, lunch and dinner. The rooms have recently been renovated and feature a modern style. The influence of the great outdoors can be seen with bold nature-inspired feature walls. The Comfort Rooms are appropriately named with big, supremely comfortable beds (king and two queen bed rooms are available). For a little outdoor space from which to gaze at the beauty of the Rockies, we highly recommend one of the first-floor Superior Patio Rooms. The best views of the hotel’s spectacular surroundings can be enjoyed from the Premium Rooms.

Moose Hotel & Suites, Banff Moose Hotel & Suites, Banff 4

Moose Hotel & Suites, Banff

With its wooden exterior and cosy interiors, the popular Moose Hotel & Suites has the feel of a modern ski chalet that wouldn’t feel out of place high up in the mountains. However, this popular spot sits in the heart of Banff just a couple of minutes’ walk away from its many shops, bars and restaurants. You won’t forget you’re in the mountains though – the granite peaks of the Rockies are an ever-present backdrop, particularly when you are relaxing in the rooftop hot tubs. The rooms and suites have a traditional feel, however the more modern artwork gives you a sense of place with statement moose pieces on the walls! Choose a Superior Room if you plan on spending most of your time out and about; however, if you want somewhere to retreat to for a few hours every day and plenty of space, choose one of the One Bedroom Suites or the Rooftop One or Two Bedroom Suites which have a living area and kitchenette with a microwave, fridge and sink.

Glacier View Lodge, Icefields Parkway Glacier View Lodge, Icefields Parkway

Glacier View Lodge, Icefields Parkway

Most trips on Alberta’s breathtaking Icefields Parkway are a full day experience. By staying at this renovated lodge, you can slow down the pace and experience the beauty of the Rocky Mountains and the Columbia Icefields after the crowds have gone for the night and before they arrive the next morning. The lodge is located on the third floor of the Columbia Icefield Glacier Discovery Centre so you’ll have all access to all the facilities there and an exclusive lounge where you can sit back and soak up the views. Your stay here includes a Champagne reception on arrival and exclusive evening trip out onto the Athabasca Glacier in an Ice Explorer vehicle. Later in the evening, you’ll be served a three-course dinner before you head to your Glacier or Mountain View Room for the night. The next morning, following a buffet breakfast, there’ll be a guided visit to the Columbia Icefield Skywalk, a glass-floor walkway that extends over the edge of a canyon.
