We stayed 2 nights, first night we checked in, the hotel seemed slow but no parking available. We took our son down to the pool and hot tub(7pm) there was another family of 4 swimming, the floor was very grimy dirty ( slippery, slimy) there were no towels available, so we snuck to the gym to borrowed towels, there were only hand towels. We decided to make the best of it and jumped in to the pool and enjoy ourselves, just before 8pm we were approached and told the pool area closed to the kids at 8:00 and we had to leave it is adult swim only from 8:30-10 kind of upsetting but ok. We headed to our room for a good nights rest as we were skiing the next day, the noise from the common area (hallway) was quite loud in our room, I went to the bathroom and rolled a towel up and placed it on the floor in front of the door. At 11 my husband stepped out into the hall where there were 5 adults sitting on the floor with snacks and drinks visiting and asked them to keep the noise down a bit. I’m not sure what time the noise quit but it was exhausting. The next morning we headed out to ski for the day, we came straight back to the hotel for our son to be able to swim and hoped to have a nice soak in the hot tub. When we arrived to the pool area the hot tub had been drained and was closed for maintenance, my husband called the front desk to ask what was going on and we were told that we could walk a block down to another hotel and use their outdoor hot tub 😳 if we would have known that there was no pool or hot tub for our stay we would have booked else where. One of the reasons we chose the Sawridge was for the indoor pool and hot tub, we would have even appreciated finding out upon check in that the hot tub was going to be down, we could have booked a different hotel for the second night. Parking is very tight for a full sized truck and I would prefer not to park on the main roadway into town. I doubt we will book again as we stay in jasper a few times each season and have had a nicer more comfortable stay for less a few other lodges or the inn.
We have been coming to the Sawridge for well over 15 yrs, the service has slowly been declining. Breakfast is basically what other hotels offer for free, they charge $20/person unless you order a voucher in advance which is $13. Can go to Becker’s for $16 and way better. Room service does not replenish coffee or cups unless specifically asked, and even then they sometimes just ignore you. The pool used to have seating and now they have three plastic lawn chairs and that’s it. The parking lot was a disaster, you could barely park because of the amount of ruts and ice, and it was crazy dangerous for kids to walk on. No other lots on jasper looked this way. The rooms are run down, showers go between scalding and freezing, things falling out of ceilings in bathroom, sinks chipped. For the price they charge I would look elsewhere, thinking we will try the Crimson instead as it’s closer to downtown and is renovated.
Our Christmas Break Stay
This Christmas break we decided to come to the sawridge and take the kids skiing to Marmot. I had booked two queen rooms adjoining with my husband and dividing up one adult and two tewmage kids. But because we arrived on the Via train at 630am the next day were not able to get adjoining rooms. We had 342 and almost below next floor down 248. I like the hotel, all the cedar, the fireplace. But the hotel is starting to show its age. In 342 at night, you can hear water dripping. First i thought it was our taps but went to check, then i realized it was inside the wall. Then when i went down to 248 my husbands room I saw the huge water stain on the ceiling tile. I told front desk and she looked at me blankly. The hotel has a buffet for $19.99/person, but if you pre-pay the night before it is $13.99/person. This is a good deal! As for skiing the Marmot bus's first stop is the Sawridge and the first drop off hotel at the end of the day was the Sawridge. The kids would get up have breakfast and get their stuff out of the ski locker and go for the day! You can buy your bus tickets at the front desk. The kids liked the pool, I liked the spa. Being we did not drive we took taxis everywhere. It only took minutes for the taxis arrive to the hotel. This hotel is the fatthest out in town, you can walk it if you want. Its a out a 15 to 20 minute walk to the shops. In the afternoon the restaurant/bar was open across from the front desk. Food was very good. The only thing i didnt like was not enough housekeeping staff. Each day our rooms were not ready till after 3:30pm. After a day of skiing you want to come back have a shower and relax, not sit in the lounge waiting for your room to be completed. The other thing I hate are noisy room heaters. Hotels pay millions of dollars in decorative renovations but leave 40 year old clanky, noisy heaters in the room when they should be replaced. So my options are turn off the h eater and sleep in a cold room or leave on the heater and get very little sleep. Finally the hotel has a wonderful wood burning firepit out front of the hotel. On the warm days, it would have been nice if you would have put it on. Would i stay here again? Yes, Ive been coming to Jasper for 20 years now, i still like this hotel after staying at the others in town. Jasper is a tourist trap, things are more expensive here, than what you'd expect elsewhere. Hotels are well used, and need constant upkeep. Service from staff was exception and always polite. Note to management, hire more housekeepers and spend the money and replace nasty water damaged ceiling tiles.
Enjoyed staying here It is about a 15 minute walk to downtown. Rooms were clean, and we were able to see a herd of elk and mountains from our room. Housekeeping was friendly, the front desk day staff were helpful and very nice. Use the pool and hot tub. Pampered at the on site spa;. Loved the big fireplace in the restaurant. Our only complaint was the breakfast buffet. Although food was good it was cool. Would stay here again
Trip across Canada
Despite the fact that it was 45 degree below zero when we arrived, the hotel was business as usual. The automatic doors froze shut and they quickly got a fix for this. One night our heater just couldn't keep up and the maintenance man was right there with a space heater to give our room a little extra heat which worked great. I would definitely recommend a stay at the Sawridge Inn if you are ever in Jasper.
