Boutique hotel La Rose is a small and charming home-from-home right in the heart of Cambodia’s bustling capital.
With just 10 rooms, La Rose is an unexpected haven of calm in the big city, just a stone’s throw from Phnom Penh’s main attractions. Don’t be fooled by the unprepossessing exterior; once through the large wooden doors, you feel as if you’ve stepped into the house of a particularly considerate host. The eclectic interior design cleverly blends old and new in a way that only adds to the impression of being in a residential property rather than a hotel: bright modern artworks and colourful cushions are complemented by antique pieces you could easily imagine were family heirlooms.
Surprisingly for somewhere so small, there’s a fine-dining restaurant-cum-coffee shop with striking red, black and white décor, a smart-but-relaxing venue for breakfast, lunch and dinner or just a reviving drink. Foodies may also be interested in the cooking classes for guests, which include a market visit. The intimate spa offers a tempting range of treatments for face and body; we think the complimentary Khmer massage offered to every visitor per stay is a thoughtful touch. On hot days, a dip in the compact saltwater pool in the courtyard is a delight, or guests can use the larger one at a sister property a short tuk-tuk ride away.
In the 10 spacious soundproofed rooms, all individually furnished in a modern-meets-French-colonial style with Khmer touches, whitewashed walls are the perfect backdrop to photographs in primary colours and antique teak furniture. Deluxe rooms – available as single, double, twin or triple – are stylish and comfortable. For more space and a romantic gauze-draped four-poster bed, the La Rose Suite Double is worth the extra cost; the La Rose Suite Twin will appeal to couples who prefer a bed to themselves. There is also a Family Room with two large doubles and a single.
In the southern part of Phnom Penh’s central district, a short distance from the Independence Monument, Royal Palace and other places of interest
