Good Trip - Room for Improvement
This is a difficult review to write as this was our 9th visit to a Sandal’s property and our 2nd visit to a Sandal’s property during (see previous review by me Sandals La Toc 11/20) . We were at Sandal’s Royal Barbado’s for a week in August – September. There were many good things and some not so good things. I will start with the good. Good: • The hotel and the grounds are very beautiful. Having access to 2 hotels with all of the restaurants was great and the overall size of the property was very walkable and easy to navigate, as was the close proximity to the beach • The food overall was very good • Sky Bar: Shout out to Rodney. He went above and beyond to find ingredients for an espresso martini and was always trying to accommodate with a smile on his face. • Sherwin: Sherwin is the manager at Soy and when I requested cooked salmon since I do not eat Sushi, the rest of our party does, he went out of his way to be sure the salmon was prepared the way I requested • Kadesha at Schooners was so pleasant and nice and helped to make for a wonderful dinner • Shaen: I believe he is a playmaker and made sure to let us know about all of the evening activities • Mia G was our server at La Parisienne. Hands down the best server we had and she made our meal one of our favorites. She made great suggestions and was a delight. • Rhea was our butler in training and she was wonderful! We were so pleased that on our last day she graduated to full butler! She is going to be a star for sure and we wish her the very best of luck. More on the butlers later. Not so good: • We had sent in our restaurant reservation request in advance and starting on arrival asked for the schedule of restaurants and times which were reserved. At other Sandals properties the butlers provided this on arrival. We kept asking and received nothing and realized after the first 3 nights it did not appear we actually had reservations. Finally on the 4th day it was acknowledged that although the Butler manager was provided the requests by the General Manager she chose to not do anything with it so it left us in a bad situation for the remainding dinners. • Dinner at Portofino. This was a restaurant where we were told we had a reservation however we had to wait a half hour for a table and finally they set up a new table in the back. Dinner took so long (waited an hour for our meals) that people were actually falling asleep at the tables. • On arrival checked the refrigerator for our requested liquor and wine found a bottle of our requested wine OPEN and half empty. The hard liquor bottles were also opened which during COVID is concerning. • Overall service everywhere was very slow however I am mindful of the shortage of staff. The staff we interacted with were overall very pleasant and helpful. • Our Butler team consisted of 3 butlers and Rhea the trainee. Shout out to La Toya and Shaquille who unfortunately was hampered by a wrist injury. The problem was our third butler who was the main day butler. She appeared not make the reservations or arrangements she was supposed to or didn’t understand what was going on, so frequently La Toya was left to deal with what looked to be no reservation. She did it gracefully and we were very appreciative of her efforts. Without her intervention it seemed on two nights we might not have eaten. We were in touch with Charles, the General Manager throughout our stay. He clearly has a lot on his plate and did his best to try and remediate the issues and in the end he made our stay enjoyable, but I think he will have a lot of work ahead of him. One suggestion having nothing to do with Sandals is to book the private expedited service available to assist you through customs on arrival. We used Five Star Fast Track Arrival Service. We were in and out in 15 minutes so well worth the money ($65.00 per person). They took care of all of our vaccine paperwork and health questionnaires. In summary, the resort is clearly challenged during Covid. It has so much potential and positive points that we hope to return in less challenging times.
Exceeded our expectations
Our stay at Sandals Barbados was the most relaxing vacation we’ve ever taken. The resort was beautiful and even with Pandemic protocols in place we were able to enjoy our week. The staff were welcoming and worked very hard to make sure we had a great experience. Food was excellent and we never felt rushed during dinner. Our room was comfortable and we highly recommend staying in a room with a balcony soaking tub. Loved that Sandals Royal Barbados was right next door and we were able to easily move between both resorts.
I have already sent 3 e mails to customer services having spent every day of my holiday in queues for, concierge, breakfast, lunch etc .Never once got into tghe english pub.None of my e mails of complaint have been answerede .Yet I have been to sadals many times.I have a 2 centre in jamaica booked for december. That will be the last time I ever go to sandals if we experience the same holiday as at sanadlas royal barbados.
Fantastic stay at Sandals
Fantastic experience at Sandals Barbados. I was quite concerned about having spent so much money on this trip when I read some of the recent reviews before we travelled but it exceeded my expectations and then some. We were staying in one of the smaller butler suites and the room was lovely. Maybe could do with a little updating but it was still high quality and a lot cheaper than staying on the royal side which is a little more modern. The big bath tub in the room was nice, two showers excellent, bed massive and very comfy. The tranquility tub was ok, would have preferred something that more easily sat 2 people like a mini hot tub but we used it a bit when we got back at night to cool off as it was so hot and humid during our stay. Cleaning was never a problem, housekeeping came every day for both standard and turndown service. They also topped up the mini bar regularly and filled our ice each day. Air con could have been a little stronger in our room as it was so hot - it was good in the lounge area but the bedroom one wasn’t as good and was a bit noisy. We spent most of our time at the south seas pool on the royal side which was brilliant. They had a swim up bar there which meant you didn’t have to wear a mask to go to the bar. It didn’t make much sense to have to wear masks if walking up to an outside bar but not having to on the swim up side but those were the rules and we just got on with it! The service at the bar was a little slow at times but it didn’t bother us too much, we just enjoyed meeting all the other people in the pool. It was a very sociable place to hang out. The Butler’s arranged a bed for us each day but to be honest there always seemed to be plenty available at that pool so it wouldn’t have bothered us to find our own, not that we spent much time on them anyway! Food was 9/10 overall. We had some absolutely cracking meals - butches chop house was great, as was Chi. We were a little frustrated having reiterated several times on our pre booking butler form that we wanted late bookings that some had been booked in at 06:30 - we never wanted to eat that early so we did have to faff about a bit with them to try and secure alternatives which unfortunately meant we missed out on going to Kimonos. But having said that our butler team did their best to rearrange things for us. Pizzas were delicious. The Italian and French restaurants were just ok - every other one we ate at we loved but those two weren’t amazing, just fine. As others have mentioned wait times between courses did take a while sometimes but we weren’t in a rush. We ordered room service breakfast a couple of times and that was really good. We did the candlelight dinner on the beach which was brilliant. We got engaged that night! The food was really good as well. They take a lot of pictures of you so it was nice to get a couple of lovely photos from our visit although keep in mind the pictures are very expensive - $20US per snap. The bowling alley was great fun, as was the English pub with the pool table. We loved the piano bar and ended up there most evenings. Silent disco was a great laugh. We arranged to do a rum tasting at mount gay which was fun and we also did the cool runnings catamaran trip which was a great day. We couldn’t really work out what the deal was with water sports - they say those were included but we went to try and find out some more info on it but couldn’t work out who to speak to. It wasn’t really an issue for us as we weren’t too fussed, I’m sure if we’d put some more effort in we could have found someone! Local area was relatively safe to walk around. We found a bar called mimosas about 15 mins walk away which was nice. If you’re the type that gets bitten, take a lot of bug spray / bite cream! I seemed to get bitten about 10 times a day. The best thing about this resort was how friendly everyone was. Because of the adults only / couples vibe we ended up chatting to tons of people and met some people we will stay in touch with going forward. There are definitely a few things that could be improved here but none of them were enough to dampen our spirits, we had an absolutely fantastic trip that we will remember for the rest of our lives. Thank you to all of the staff for their hard work!
