Once was enough
Had a stopover here but was really looking forward to it. After checkin, finding our room was rather complicated, and no lifts so lugged luggage up stairs. Room was large with a large deck and great view over the resort. We were very disappointed only 1 pool was open, too far away to use. We got takeaway dinner from the restaurant but that was quite confusing, but ultimately the servings were generous. The apartment was comfortable but a bit tired. One stay was enough, I’ve satisfied my curiosity!
Pacific Bay Resort – Stay somewhere else
Having secured some time off, my partner and I planned a 10-day coastal trip, which would be the only holiday for us for 2020. After staying in Diamond Beach and Port Macquarie, we were most looking forward to the end of our stay in Coffs Harbour at Pacific Bay Resort. I mean, if you were to look at their website, their copywriting and pics sell it as a first-class experience. You’d also expect this having been taken over in 2018 by a part of the successful independent management group overseeing the prestigious Bonville Golf Resort and Jonah’s Restaurant and Boutique Hotel at Sydney’s Whale Beach. PROS • Staff pleasant and as helpful as they can be to their control. • Lovely resort outlook and grounds. • Good water pressure. • Appreciate the washer and dryer. • Good size for a one-bedroom executive room. CONS • Dated even though “refurbished” • The refurbishment is literally a splash of white paint on the walls, some cheap new carpet, and painting the old cane furniture white and reupholstering the chair pads. • 3 pools in total with two closed due to “COVID” and requiring a COVID marshal, which is false according to NSW Government as under Public Health Orders all swimming pools, saunas and spas only mandatory requirements is to complete a COVID-19 Safety Plan, consider the benefits of registering as COVID Safe and complete the plan in consultation with staff, then share it with them. When told this to staff, the story then changed due to being Strata controlled and having to go to a Strata board to re-open which would not happen during our stay. • Gym also saying available on welcome letter and website with no amendment or updated COVID information saying temporarily closed and just told closed due to COVID and requiring COVID marshal, which is only the case for over 20 people in the gym at one time. • Other hotels and resorts in the area have their facilities open. • Spa in room so old the pump and jets don’t do anything. • WiFi – don’t even bother. On check-in, given password and told what network to connect to. On the little ticket stapled to the map with the password it says speed upload and download unlimited. Yeah right! Worked the first night but expect a download speed of 2.73 to 4 mps down and around 1.13 up. Called several times the second day and was told the router was in next doors room which they couldn’t access due to them not being in their room. Gave up in the end and hot spotted phone. However, confused as they couldn’t enter next door to re-set a router, but could enter ours when we weren’t there to leave body wash. • Amenities had 2 conditioners instead of a body wash. Called to ask for one, but housekeeping was busy with departures. Used hand soap as we were in the middle of morning showers and were heading out and had to get from reception instead. Housekeeping obviously came anyway to deliver body wash while we were out, which we did not realise until I questioned if my partner had taken out empty wine bottles and a box that was left on the kitchen bench to which he said no, and realised housekeeping had come in and replenished the amenities, hung up a couple fresh towels and took out the empty wine bottles with the box that we were keeping to pack our grocery goods which also had some medication in it that is now obviously in the bin. • Only a small two seater black leather lounge to sit on and relax to watch TV which in my opinion is not practical or comfortable for the room type with an occasional chair taking up space that you would not use and a 4 seater dining table that takes up more room than it’s worth and honestly could have had a couple decent lounges in the living room with an outdoor dining suite on the large oversized balcony if you wanted to dine in your room. • The TV’s are pathetic for a refurbished room of this size. Tiny 27” TV’s that you have to look down to, as they are mounted low due to a partition between the bedroom and living room which is impractical and should have just been a false wall that they could have mounted a more modern larger TV. • Additional $150 holding fee • Lighting is horrible with floor lamp, table lamp, kitchen downlights etc all fitted with cool white light rather than warm which would make the lighting much more cosy and inviting and actually want to use instead of not using at all. • No lifts within terrace building means you have to carry luggage up and down flights of stairs. • No housekeeping or room service. • The $7.50 2 Slice K-Mart Toaster shorted out the power in the kitchen. A 4-star property is expected to achieve a deluxe guest experience. A wide range of facilities and superior design qualities which are typically complemented by service standards that reflect the varied and discerning needs of the guest. This establishment is nothing more than a 3 star facility. Feedback was given, with no reply or compensation from management, and to be honest, the staff seem very well rehearsed at apologising, as I don't think any of what I have mentioned is new news. Very disappointing.
Not worth the money
We booked a deluxe hotel room as we were told that they had been refurbished to the highest level so we thought we would splurge for two nights . Very dissapointed as the room is tiny and the bathroom even smaller ! The balcony furniture was old and the small table was peeling paint . Ordinarily this would not worry us but having been told how new and refurbished to the highest level we were expecting more for what we paid each night . I would not bother paying for these rooms again . The resort is very overpriced for what it is .
We only stayed for one night in the Executive Room on the lagoon. The room was clean and a comfortable bed, but the room itself was very dated. It also had a strong musty smell. The resort grounds are beautiful, its a shame they can't make arrangements to have all the pools opened up and the gym opened up again. If your are golfer this resort would suit perfectly but if you came to use the facilities, its a waste of money. We had a pizza at the Bayside and Grill. It was ok. The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. I am sure this would have been a thriving resort back in the 1990s. Much like the rest of New South Wales, domestic tourism needs to lift its game. I hope COVID brings that about.
golf road trip
I would come back again to love this result great little course lots of fun. we just did 9 holes twice. It's very pretty. it has a great pool and a beach 2-minute walk. the food is also good in the resort and very friendly this is like a 5-star experience.
