A bit depressing
The location is excellent, only a block or two back from the harbour, and the public areas(bar/library) are characterful. But the rooms are basic, and that’s putting it kindly. The first room we were allocated was small and dark, on the ground floor. On request we were then moved to a better and quite spacious room on the first floor. However the aircon didn’t work in the lounge area (unless you wanted cold air) and the unit in the bedroom was noisy, which meant we couldn’t use it overnight. The windows didn’t open. So the room was cold and musty. Plus the monochromatic colour scheme really needed the colourful bed throws and cushions shown on the website, but weren’t actually in the rooms. However the greatest downfall was the bathroom. Tiny, a bit worn, in need of a good scrub and definitely not up to par for any 3, 4 or 5 star hotel. Seriously this hotel has potential but needs a lot of TLC and more attentive management before I’d recommend it to anyone.
The hotel main areas are delightfully decorated and modelled BUT for the room rate the room itself was disappointing. The bathroom was tiny, not even a metre wide, no room for towel rails, toilet was so close to the small basin that your knees were touching it, vanity was only big enough at 300mm wide for one toiletry bag. Shower was only 800mm square. It was all very claustrophobic. I don’t understand how a five star hotel can have a superior room with a bathroom that is 900mm wide and just over 2m long. It felt the same size as a public toilet cubicle and certainly isn’t luxury. The bathroom extractor fan seemed to stay on all the time too. The bedroom itself was nice although very dark in decor.
Ibis masquerading as M Gallery
The rooms are nice but the bathrooms are 2 star at best - pokey and not well lit. Also, the phone in our room doesn’t work and basics like bottled water have to be requested at reception along with additional soap. As an M Gallery property, we expect not to have to beg for these things. Maybe look at other properties nearby, instead.
My 13 night stay was very comfortable. The hotel is in a side street off the main tourist area in the Rocks. My room overlooked the Sydney Opera House with a large bay window. The room was worth it for this feature alone. While the bathrooms were dated, the room was well serviced with excellent amenities and very helpful staff. The room's abundance of nature light provided a calm and relaxing atmosphere in such a crowded location. Perhaps some double glazing would help with the late night reveling noise on weekends. Excellent breakfasts but also very busy on weekends.
Good Location and Friendly Staff but ……
The hotel is unique and staff are friendly. The key to the hotel room is all but impossible to use. Possibly because of coronavirus the restaurants were disappointing. Located in the Rocks was excellent. Close to ferries, light rail and markets and restaurants. We have stayed in MGallery properties around the world. The Rocks Hotel has room for improvement.
