Tropical island paradise
What a place to get a away from the COVID. You could almost forget there is a pandemic , except all the staff wearing masks. We were on the 15th floor with a fantastic view out to the islands and overlooking the beach below. The room was showing its age , but it was still clean and comfortable. The staff at the hotel were great. They seem to be coping quite well with COVID and school holidays. We did not experience much delay at breakfast, and we have no complaints about the service or quality of the food. We made use of both the beach side pool, the beach and the hotel pool, had lunch at Sails , service was great there too. We are early starters and seem to get in before the rush. All the restaurants on the island were booked out, so I would book in advance using the Hayman island app. There are free shuttle buses to one tree hill and the Marina. There are a few take away options on the island as well as an IGA( always a large line during peak periods). Same as cruising, we saw a lot of reserving chairs at the pools , starting as early as 7 am. So grab your chair early if you want a prime position. This is such a nice place when the weather is fine, we had fine weather all except our first afternoon. We were here for 6.5 days. Also book your excursions and water sports early at the tour desk at sails. Overall experience was great. One thing that seemed a bit strange, there seems to be a lack of security and supervision at the pools. We saw several people breaking pool rules with disregard for other people’s safety. Eg . Jumping off the bridge ,adults bomb diving into areas where children were swimming.
We have stayed at the Reef View Hotel a few times now over the years; this time we stayed in a Coral Sea View King Room on the 13th Floor for 7 nights. First time we have stayed in such a high room. They are much more well appointed than the lower, cheaper Garden View rooms. The king bed was comfortable and the room was cosy. To be honest, we weren't in the room other than a few hours before bed and while we were sleeping. The hotel is dated, but I've never found it unclean. Rooms are serviced daily and done well. Overall, I found the hotel clean and good enough. If you are coming on a holiday to spend a lot of time in the hotel room, I can understand some being disappointed in the rooms, especially in the lower rooms. We've been at a few different times of the year; this trip was just before school holidays. Found it to be not too crowded and plenty of room at pools, however COVID-19 restrictions meant many restaurants and bars were closed or had limited availability, meaning we couldn't eat out without having booked even more than a month in advance which was disappointing on this trip as we did not plan that far ahead. Can't even imagine what the upcoming school holidays will be like; we have been during these periods before and it is extremely busy and noisy, being a family orientated resort. That being said, the staff were generally pretty good and friendly; particularly during the lunchtime pool service, chatty and attentive which was really good. Some of the staff were a little more abrupt which I can understand during these COVID times. Particularly during our included breakfast service; we were often waiting for service when it seemed everyone else around us was being looked after. The hotel was well signed regarding the COVID-19 protocols, but there wasn't a lot of social distancing happening. This didn't bother me at all, but if it is something you are worried about right now, this is not the hotel to stay at, especially during peak times. Overall, this trip was quite good. This hotel is still more about a room to sleep in while you go and enjoy the islands pools, beaches and activities, so if you want something more modern and perhaps less busy, better off finding something more private like Beach Club, Bungalows or Holiday Homes. You kind of get what you pay for, but as mentioned the rooms are clean and the staff are generally good so not too bad.
What sort of Hotel has no knives forks plates bowls and corkscrews Tired premise with overrated breakfast at $35 minimum Nice aspect but needs a lick of paint and some basic facilities It’s a No here.
Loved our stay
My first time to Hamilton and had a wonderful stay for a friends 50th. The food at Sails was excellent and staff everywhere were friendly and attentive. The hike to Passage Peak well worth the effort . Rooms large and spacious. Carlos gave us an excellent little tour on the shuttle on our way out - a lovely way to finish our divine long weekend. We will be back !
Only thing going for it is the reef view
We spent 5 nights here to celebrate my wife’s birthday. We’d normally go overseas for such an occasion but with border closures our options were limited. We also have a 5 year old child so the adult only resorts were excluded sadly. At first the Reef View hotel seems good. The check in process was a breeze but we had to take our bags up to the room ourselves. The view from the room (1516) was spectacular, looking over the Whitsundays and Catseye beach. The room was large and clean be it dated. The 1970s Soviet style bathroom was also big but very dated. Be careful with the minibar. They seem to add a few dollars to the bill daily for “beers you drank” even though you don’t drink that particular brand of warm beer. I’m not sure if this is a genuine error on their part or a dishonest ploy. Check your bill on the TV daily. The fridge was abysmal. It wouldn’t cool anything you put in it and had a horrible stench. The hotel was very busy hence getting into the restaurant was a challenge. The lines for breakfast were very long and it took almost 20 mins to get a table so plan accordingly. The staff were friendly but the service at the pool terrace was horrible. It took too long to get coffee for breakfast or beers and cocktails with meals. This seems to be a trend on the island as the Sails restaurant had similar issues. The pool at the reef view is decent but the one at Sails is better with a swim up bar and ocean views. The service at sails is equally horrendous. A buggy is mandatory on the island but book well in advance to avoid disappointment. On the whole it was a good holiday but I doubt I’d stay at the reef view again.
