A nice enough first try of a Spicers hotel
We are pleased to have stayed at this cosy boutique hotel but the Balfour Suite we had needed a few bits of maintenance. It’s a lovely spacious room type with a homely but still ‘design hotel’ feel but these various small things added up. One of the handles on the bedside drawer had fallen off and was just placed inside the drawer. The double doors that open from the bath into the sitting area presumably have been forced many times and broken as they didn’t function. Cables hanging down under the TV looked untidy. The front of the Nespresso machine was broken off and providing three pods is not exactly sufficient for two guests! Also, there was still an old pod in the machine. For $375 per night all these little things shouldn’t really be noticeable. A basic provision of a nice hotel is (it goes without saying!) to make up the room! We accept guests may well want to choose to take up the hotel’s suggestion not to have the room made up (not sure if the suggestion was promoted by covid or water saving?). However, we think a note on the bed saying that room servicing is NOT provided and you need to request it at reception if you want it isn’t acceptable. They should do this in reverse and ask for the guests preference (service or no service) at check in. In any case, whilst we were going to go along with no servicing, when we left for the day we did hang the ‘please make up my room’ sign just to see what would happen and it had been done when we arrived back. We thought the gin bottles for water on the bedside tables were fun idea! The location and ability to go for a walk all around the lovely area of New Farm is great. Such a nice spot to live in Brisbane! It seemed from the floor plan (which we only looked at as we were walking to our car to leave the hotel!) that there was probably a common lounge room area in the separate Simla building where our room was located. Not sure why they wouldn’t have told us about that, if it was indeed an available space? The rooftop bar is worth a visit at the beginning of your stay, just to settle in and orientate, but it is pretty tiny and the view is quite obstructed.
Spicers Balfour was exactly what we needed. Nestled away from the noisy bustle of city life, yet so close to the city. The walkways and bike tracks are so close and accessible. The staff were very attentive and the dining is exquisite
Excellent option for an overnight city stay
The overall package is excellent we had cocktails on the rooftop bar, a superb dinner and very nice breakfast with the convenience of walking to our room. The room was good but not great but balanced well with the other aspects. Also easy walking distance to Howard Smith Wharf.
This is the fourth of the Spicers group that we have stayed in. A different experience each time but service and quality is always consistently good. If you are looking for a quality accommodation in the city then Balfour Hotel is perfect. Lovely food and great staff.
Romantic getaway in a brilliant location
Absolutely loved the location (very short walk to Howard Smith Wharves and River walk as well as New Farm itself), fabulous service and atmosphere of this boutique hotel. It was everything and more. Very personal experience. We will return if not here, to one of your other retreats.
