Recommended highlights

MARGARET RIVER The Margaret River wine region might only be around 50 years old, but its 200-odd wineries have made a name for themselves in an impressively short time. Some of Australia’s finest wines grow from these vines so you’re likely to find something to suit your taste, whether you like your wine red, white, organic or served with a side of accolades. We recommend organising some wine tastings for when you get there; some smaller and more exclusive wineries have limited space or only accept pre-bookings.

ALBANY Albany is Western Australia’s oldest town and the last piece of home land that World War I soldiers saw before they left for war. It’s home to the National Anzac Centre, a facility that tells the story of and pays tribute to those who served in the war, and dramatic natural sites like The Gap and Natural Bridge.

ESPERANCE Lucky Bay has such dazzling white sands that almost look unreal. As you sit on the snow-white beach and watch the luminous blue water rolls in, a kangaroo might casually bounce past you and pause long enough for you to catch the moment on your phone. There’s no shortage of dreamy beaches in Esperance and walking trails can lead to bursts of wildflower in spring.
