Stayed on a powered site with ensuite. So clean. Restaurant excellent. Had a great time beach fishing & had a couple of meals of whiting that fed 4. Stayed there with family who had a beach view apartment. Girls had a great time. Our son, wife & 2 girls had just been camping at Coral Bay & wanted a bit more space than the caravan offfered so we had their caravan. All enjoyed it so much we are booking again for next year. The beach side cabins had everything.
If you want a backpacker experience at resort prices, this is the place. Our room was a beach view room with a bar next to it. This bar had band playing so loud that the room was not able to be used due to loud music. So why pay for a room that can't be used. Also, fees to even get to the resort is ridiculous and not cheap. A hidden cost that is not explained until you try to access the resort. All in all, totally poor experience.
We booked a cabin. It was clean. The bed was comfortable. That’s all I can say that’s positive. The cabin had full width sliding glass doors onto a patio overlooking the ocean. Sounds great doesn’t it? Unfortunately the glass doors overlooked a thoroughfare and there were no net curtains so either be an exhibitionist when changing or close the blackout curtains and turn the lights on. It seemed as though all the occupants of neighbouring cabins wanted to sit on the grass adjacent to our patio and smoke (in a non-smoking resort?!) and my last gripe was the shower - a scalding or cold dribble, no matter how much I adjusted it. Very very overpriced for what we got.
The only reason it didn’t get 5 stars is because the $15 fee per person levied by the government needs to be built into the room rate the way a similar fee is at Rottnest. The service provided is excellent especially when considering the location is 860 kms away from the capital city of WA. The staff are friendly and facilities cater for a large variety of requirements from unpowered tent sites to fully serviced suites. The outlook over Shark Bay is spectacular. Keep in mind that the WA coast is very windy in spring but that Monkey Mia affords a modicum of protection as it faces east. Two pools, the beach, two bars, the National Park and the boat charters mean that there is plenty to do here.
Newly renovated beach unit..... the best and only option
The RAC Monkey Mia Resort is the only accommodation available so there is no motivation to improve the guest experience. We stayed in a newly renovated beach unit which was really nicely done. The ability to step off the veranda straight onto the beach was fabulous. Unfortunately the cleaning was poor. No consideration of COVID-19 protocols. This is a very big property that includes a caravan park. Walking past some of the older units without any views apart from a dusty road, I’m pleased we paid the high price for the beach side unit. The food options were limited and poor quality. The reason for visiting was to experience a close encounter with the dolphins but it’s such a controlled tourist environment it is greatly over rated and not worth the 150klm drive each way. Avoid staying at any RAC property.
