We dined here for a special occasion, a significant birthday. The whole experience was lovely, drinks to start in the garden and then shown to our table to have a starter followed by a main and desert, all accompanied by wines selected to suit the meal. Service was attentive without being over bearing and the whole experience made us fgeel very special.
The sounds of cicadas
Cicada Lodge at Nitmiluk Gorge, just outside of Katherine, was a delightful weekend getaway from Darwin. The staff were helpful, relaxed and friendly and created a wonderful environment. The rooms have a lovely bush view with a little verandah (fan over head) to enjoy the sounds of the cicadas in the outdoors. A lovely pool with large umbrellas and lounges on the edge to find reprieve from the sun. The food at the restaurant was delicious and catered to dietary requirements well. Matching wines with dinner was beautiful! The only downside I saw was the dinning room was far too cold with the aircon but the staff were flexible to us moving outside to eat by the pool instead. We enjoyed the boat cruise with the swim as well! Wet season deals ($) enabled us to stay in this lodge, so that was good.
A little piece of oaradise
We stayed here with friends just at the start of the wet season. The location is excellent with lots of interesting nature and bush on your door step. Watch out for the black cockatoos. The rooms are very comfortable and well appointed and the air con is very effective and much welcome!! We had dinner here on both nights where they offered a fixed menu of very delicious and local fare. The chef is very good and compares very well to meals in large city high end establishments. It was also nicely portioned and extremely tasty. They also offered a good wine selection and at fair prices. We really enjoyed our trip to Katherine and returning to this little piece of paradise at the end of a hot day. It’s a treat worth offering to yourself when you’re in this beautiful part of the world.
1 night in Cicada Lodge.
Spent 1 night in Cicada Lodge after doing the Katherine Gorge cruise. It was really lovely. Beautiful spot. Accommodation was 1st class. Check-in was easy, once we located the staff. Drinks by the pool before dinner was a lovely touch. Set menu for dinner was amazing....right down to the dessert course! Wish we could have stayed a further night. One thing - breaky was a bit slow for our guide. But after a polite reminder - it was served promptly. So quiet.....
Would be good for a special occasion stay
A long drive brought us to the most expensive of the 14 hotels in which we stayed in Australia, by some margin. There were only 18 rooms, on one level, set out along boardwalks. Very nice room, with a large modern bathroom. Large verandah, but no view, just a solid wall of bush about 10 feet away. Odd things: the small freezer compartment in the fridge badly needed defrosting - it was completely solid with ice and therefore the fridge was barely cold even at the highest setting; the large square shower head was loose, with the result that water squirted out of the top, over the shower screen and towards the light fittings, not good; the air con was effective, but quite noisy. The small swimming pool was refreshing and had comfy sun loungers and a big settee with cushions, but in the afternoon the flies drove us mad. There were only two options for dinner; the bistro across the car park where you ate outside next to the large pool that serviced the campsite, or a four-course fixed tasting menu at 99AU$ per person without wine. We went across to loo at the bistro, which appeared to be a shack/large kiosk but the guy manning it said it wasn’t the bistro!? Included in our night’s stay were canapés and 2 glasses of wine each before dinner, which were very pleasant. So we went for the menu at the hotel. It was supposed to be fine dining, but fell short of that. The first “course” in fact turned out to be bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar to dip it in. The other courses were pleasant but unmemorable. Breakfast was also included in our stay. I had the continental breakfast, which came in a triple dish. Excellent ripe fresh fruit in the left, a large glass of yogurt with berries and a tiny dish of granola in the middle and a croissant with a slice of ham and a slice of cheese on the right. My partner had eggs Benedict, which were very good. Decent orange juice and coffee. We thought it would be a nice place to get away from it all for a special occasion - a birthday, anniversary or honeymoon - but otherwise it didn’t justify the distance/cost.
