A place to stay in your memory
A wonderful little hamlet. The Star Hotel is just a great place to stay, from the time we arrived we felt the staff were so friendly you felt ease. The rooms are well presented, nothing was a problem. The meals were delicious. The atmosphere is a place to relax. Plenty of things to do in the area. Sorry it has taken us so long to visit the area, we will certainly return.
Great fun and in an interesting location
The boys really know how to make you feel at home and is a fascinating and very historical location. Walhalla is now an out and out tourist location but it does not take much imagination to understand the boom years of the gold rush when the town must have been buzzing. The Star Hotel is a reconstruction of the original hotel that burnt down. The meals are a little limited and in today's market, you could say the rooms are a bit basic but I would definetly go back!
Very cosy retreat in beautiful scenic Walhalla
Warning for starters, Walhalla is not for you if you what you want is a buzzy, crowded city full of noise, lights and cafes. it has cafes, plenty of activities and history, but in this haunting and narrow valley, you do feel like you are stepping into different times and space. Then again if you drive that far into the VIctorian countryside, peace and nature is hopefully what you are looking for. The accommodation jewel in Walhalla is the Star Hotel: there you get a large cozy room with ensuite, beautiful views and warmth in a gorgeous renovated public house. This is the second time we stayed there and the restaurant menu had been trimmed to a more "pensione" 3 course type since our last visit, which was delicious and served quickly, but it is important that you clarify what you are prepared to eat or not before your arrival. We had a vegetarian with us and her dish was perfect, however it would have been problematic if we hadn't advised them, because supplies are limited due to the remoteness of the place. Breakfast is a buffet type and the whole thing has this country home feel, complete with the guest areas with books, board games sofas and fireplaces. The hosts are professionals and helpful and the place can't be faulted in our opinion. We will be back.
A unique place but not for everyone
A very unique hotel in a tiny town were you feel part of the past. I arrived at 5 m when all the stores were closed and all daily visitors gone so it was a cool bit bizarre experience being on my own with the other handful of folks staying in town. The hotel was cute and comfortable though internet didn’t work after 8 pm (cell reception is remarkably good), and had not come back when I left in the morning. There’s no TV either which for me was a plus but given the fact that there’s not much to do after 6 pm, it’s something to consider. Bring a book! Be aware that the room is VERY basic with good AC and a very well stocked minibar outside the room in the common hallways. The shower is a bit sad and it was hard to keep a steady temperature since it would go from very cold to very hot without touching it. I paid for breakfast but they don’t serve it until 8 and I had a long day ahead so had to leave way before there was anything open for a bite. Do not add breakfast to your room if you are thinking of leaving before 8. In summary, if you are looking for a unique experience like I was, this place is great. However, it’s not for everyone and a day visit when everything is open may be a better choice for you.
The shop keepers in Walhalla are great.
The room itself was good, the ensuite was terrible, mould in shower, curtain rail hanging down and shower curtain laying on the floor. 1 small towel per person ( not good for a lady washing her hair). the key system is no good if 1 person wishes to go out as if you take the key the other person has no power in the room. if you leave the key with them you have to summons the owner to get back in the front door. The bed is advertised as a king but is 2 beds pushed together. Overall I was not impressed with our stay.
