About this independent tour
The Ghan is an independent rail journey.
Named after the hardy Afghan camel trains, The Ghan traces a route pioneered by early travellers across this vast continent. Classic and ornate, the train has echoes of old-world rail travel, with a strong emphasis on wining and dining in air-conditioned comfort.
Darwin to Adelaide
Roll out of Darwin in style, traversing remote landscapes en route to Katherine, where there’s the chance to gain an insight into the lives of the traditional owners of Nitmiluk. Then, in the isolated Outback town of Alice Springs, there’s time to explore local landmarks or take to the skies over the ancient MacDonnell Ranges. On your final night, you’ll be treated to a showcase of Outback stars in Manguri, a remote town close to Coober Pedy.
Adelaide to Darwin
Sit back and relax as the landscape transforms from urban to agricultural to pastoral, marvelling as the mighty Flinders Ranges disappear into the horizon. Wake in time to see a remarkable Outback sunrise during a morning stop at Marla in remote South Australia, then glide into Alice Springs, gateway to Australia’s fiery red interior. The next day, Katherine awaits with its towering sandstone cliffs and Aboriginal culture, before the train rolls into the Top End city of Darwin.
A range of immersive off-train excursions are included for Gold Service and Platinum Service guests. Depending on your chosen route, these may include river cruises, guided walks and indigenous experiences.
The Ghan Expedition
This special itinerary covers the Outback over three nights instead of two nights. With more time, you'll get to take in the stars with a barbecue dinner at Alice Springs Telegraph Station, and travel via Katherine, Alice Springs and Coober Pedy with excursions included.
