Equivalent to a 2 star holiday inn
This hotel is a 2 star hotel by continental standards. We booked and paid more for a lake view room. They gave us a room on the first floor that looked onto a big bush. You literally need to get on your tiptoes to see the lake from the room because it is covered by the bushes! The room reeked of cigarette. The hotel is non-smoking but nobody seems to care that people are smoking in their rooms. Oh another thing, we had a bug in our bed. We asked to change rooms, there were no rooms available until the next day. On the next day we changed rooms to a “suite” which was the exact same room as the previous room but higher up with a view on the roof of the hotel’s lower rooms and a far away lake view. Basically, an obstructed view of the water. The rooms are very very basic and beds are very uncomfortable. The worst pillow I have ever slept on in my entire life. The breakfast is ok at most, but coffee horrible. When you ask for a cappuccino (I love filtered coffee but could not drink this one) there is an additional charge!! What a joke. As compensation for the terrible room we had (we paid for a lake view and did not get it), the hotel initially offered us a meal, but we already had plans. Ultimately, when we checked out they did not compensate us and simply gave us 2 bottles of water! Do not stay here. It’s terrible. Stay at Los Ponchos.
Great views and comfortable
Our Lakeview room had a great view and was very comfortable. Although we didn’t use the pool or spa both looked nice.Breakfast had plenty of options and there is a nice bar and restaurant onsite for dinner. In the warmer months lunch can be taken in the garden. The hotel is a 30 minute walk from town but there is a hotel shuttle bus provided which is very convenient should you want to visit downtown for shopping or dining out.
Some positives and good food, but...
We stayed four days in their upgraded suite with lake views. The positives: nice pool, good breakfast and dinners, cleanish with friendly and accommodating front desk staff (not so the pool staff), electric remote drapes and jacuzzi tub were nice touches. The negatives: the walls are paper thin and you can clearly hear conversations in adjoining rooms, the "gym" is frankly inadequate, the bathroom is tiny with a plywood door a 1/2 inch thick, and the shower unpredictably and repeatedly switches from hot to cold, pillows and mattress could certainly use improvement. Agree wholeheartedly with the previous reviewer who seems to have shared similar experiences here--not 5-star as billed!
very good and solid... for a 3-star hotel
First of all, I would like to thank all personnel of Xelena. Very professional, very service-minded - they tried to address all our requests (and there were quite a few) immediately. I also don't doubt that Xelena is one of the best hotels in El Calafate - I heard it from more than one of tour companies operating in the area. But service-minded staff and the fact that the neighbor hotels are worse than yours, don't automatically make you a 5-star hotel, do they? You also have to have hotel facilities matching 5-star level. And this is what is definitely missing in Xelena. We stayed 2 times in Junior Suites, which is far from regular room. The bathrooms were the size of a telephone booth with shabby bathtubs. For shower amenities there are bottles on the wall filled with some dubious liquids. Door to the bathroom in a room on 3rd floor was a little bit askew, so you could close it only with a good push with your shoulder - I am sure people in the neighboring rooms appreciated hearing that. And then the level of noise... First night we stayed we got a room on the 5th floor, right above the reception. No better choice for location of a Junior Suite. So, you had a full impression that you are sleeping in a lobby. Luckily next morning we had to get up very early. But on the 2nd time, we actually had time to have a late start and we did ask to allocate us a quiet room. We got one on the 3rd floor. But no way sleeping late there either. Every time someone was going out for early breakfast or to catch a transfer and was closing the door to their room we were jumping-up in bed, because all the walls started to vibrate. If someone started to talk in the corridor - you could participate in the conversation not leaving your bed. And if someone started to walk up or down the staircase, you could clearly understand whether it is a man or a woman and which type of shoes they are wearing. All in all, I can't say a bad word about Xelena, but 5-star status should mean something, shouldn't it? So either the management should do some upgrades or just to take a star or 2 off - then there will be no questions from anyone. And in my next review I would be only saying what a good 3-star hotel they are.
i loved this hotel. we were greeted at the door by friendly staff who gladly assisted us to check in and then to our room. our room had a lake view; it was like a living picture ... beautiful! i highly recommend Xelena for its great service, excellent food and beautiful lake viewpoint. i wish we could have stayed longer to experience many the many amenities they offer but alas there is much to see in the area.
