Get to know the Emirates on an authentic, smaller scale in Ajman. On the Arabian Gulf coast, Ajman's beaches are some of the best in the United Arab Emirates, and the relaxed pace makes it a great option for a chilled out beach holiday or relaxing stopover. There's a great choice of high-end beachfront hotels and food and drink is less expensive than in Dubai, meaning a stay in Ajman is better value and yet equally luxurious. It's an easy transfer from the Dubai airport at just half an hour (dependent on traffic), so you can take a day trip before retiring back in Ajman's peaceful surrounds.
Ajman is compact and easy to get around. Main attractions like the Ajman Museum, Saleh Souk and Ajman Fish Market are within a 15-minute walk from the majority of hotels which are on the beachfront. Taxis are the best way to make longer distances and hotels often run complimentary shuttle services to and from Sharjah and Dubai for day trips.
Things to do
While it's much quieter than its neighbours, Ajman is full of delightful surprises. As well as blissful relaxation on pristine beaches and shopping for international brands at the modern City Centre Ajman mall, there are plenty of unique things to do in Ajman. Go kayaking with Quest for Adventures in the mangroves and lagoons of the Al Zorah Nature Reserve – a playground for fish that jump and birdlife like flamingo and heron – or tee off at the nearby 18-hole championship golf course.
Head to the Gold Souk for beautiful jewellery and the refurbished Saleh Souk for traditional tailoring, or experience dining that's a little different at Ajman Qubes, a concept space where shipping containers have been repurposed into restaurants and cafés. Kuoni guests also receive free entry to Ajman Museum, where you can learn about Emirati history and get a sense of life in the United Arab Emirates as it used to be.
Out on the water, you can take on watersports with Quest for Adventures including wakeboarding, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding – or charter a yacht for a luxurious day out at sea. The new Al Zorah Marina 1 is a great venue with plenty of entertainment for all ages. Take a pearl dhow excursion and learn about the region's pearl diving history in the mangroves on a traditional boat ride and take home a fresh oyster pearl as a souvenir.
