The Victoria Falls Hotel
I treated myself, my mother and my 13 year old daughter to a trip to the great Victoria Falls. The trip was extra special as my mother had taken me there when i was 13 years old. Every high expectation i had of staying at The Victoria Falls Hotel and revisiting the 16 look out sights of the Victoria Falls was met and in a lot of cases exceeded! Myself, my mom an daughter returned to South Africa via Rovos Rail, which was magnificent! It really was a trip of a life time!
The Grand Old Lady NEVER Disappoints!!
You just can't beat the Old World Charm of this gracious hotel and its staff! You would be a fool not to encapsulate the entire charm of the Victoria Falls by staying at this majestic hotel. However if you are not staying here it should be still on your list to visit while in the area - the view from the Terrace is breathtaking for afternoon tea or sun downers!! Simply a MUST!!
Victoria Falls Hotel - sadly a shadow on its previous glory. ☹️
The Vic Falls Hotel has been badly affected by the pandemic and has not yet got back to its previous high standards. The staff are helpful, courteous, generally well trained and are generally doing a great job in difficult circumstances and low occupancy. The hotel is undergoing significant renovation and only one wing is currently being used - the Stables Wing. We were there for 4 nights and only 1 restaurant was available with the exception of one lunch and one dinner when there were two. The food is OK but it is a very limited menu, but again the staff try hard in these difficult times for Zimbabwe. WARNING - check your bill. All F&B is priced in US$ which is fine. However if you decide to charge food and drinks to the room your are given in bill in local currency at an exchange rate of 1:100. When you get to check out you can pay by credit card in US$ BUT your local currency bill is converted back to US$ at the “Government Rate” of 1:87 - increasing the US$ price by 15%. Despite several meetings with managers on this subject in which I was assured verbally and in writing that this would be “corrected on check out”, it was not and I confirmed with the Cashiers that had I not raised the issue I would have been charged the inflated amount. I am unclear where the extra 15% goes but it can be avoided by insisting that all room charges are charged at the US$ rate that was on the menu or pay in the bar in US$ with cash or credit card. Because of a cancelled incoming flight we had to book an additional night at short notice. Our US based companions were charged $850 for the night for dinner bed and breakfast, which, given the current service limitations, which we were not informed of up front, is excessive. We truly hope VFH will be able to put all of this behind them and return to their former glory - sadly there is a long way to go.
Interesting Colonial Style Hotel with excellent Service
A typical British Colonial Style Hotel that has maintained its charm. Not modern but very nice and clean. Cant beat the views of the bridge from the lawns or restaurant. Our room was in the Stables wing - lovely courtyard with fragrant bushes was a pleasant bonus when coming and going from the room. Enjoyed wondering the hallways and public rooms to view the many period posters/pictures and articles hanging on the walls. Had a number of drinks and 2 excellent evening meals in the restaurant (outdoors) and the service was very good (special thanks to Simba and Precious our waiters). Breakfasts were OK. COVID precautions seemed very good - temperature checks and hand sterilizing every time we came back to the hotel and masks everywhere except when eating. I think many of the staff had already been vaccinated. Able to arrange COVID PCR tests at hotel if needed for onward travel (we booked ahead of time with the hotel) with printed results in sealed envelope delivered about 12 hrs later to the front desk. We walked one afternoon over to the Victoria Falls Park - well worth the trek and seemed very safe. Would highly recommend as the place to stay and experience a bit of colonial charm.
Grand hotel, well maintained and run
We had two rooms in the Stables Signature Wing. The first was comfortable, but did not have windows that connected directly with the outside. The hotel moved us, upon our complaint, to another room in the same Wing. This room had a direct view to a grassed courtyard and was nicely laid out. Both rooms had good amenities and beds and were quiet. The food is good and served on a terrace with a great view of the Victoria Falls bridge and gorge.
