Fiji
Airport
Nadi (NAN) International Airport is 8 km (5 miles) north of Nadi town on Viti Levu island. A bus service to the city operates from 7 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. (journey time is 20 minutes). Many facilities are open 24 hours a day, including bank, bar and left-luggage office.
Climate
Tropical. Southeast trade winds from May to October bring dry weather. The rainy season is from December to April. The islands are occasionally affected by cyclones (November to April) but there is a good warning system in operation and the main resorts are well equipped.
Courtesy
Dress modestly. If you visit a village, women should bear in mind that bare shoulders are frowned at. It is impolite to wear a hat in the presence of a village chief, and you must remove your shoes before entering someone's house. When visiting a village it is customary to preent a gift of yaquona (or kava) to the chief.
Currency
The Fijian dollar is divided into 10 cents. Coins range from 1 to 50 ¢; banknotes from $1 to $50. US dollars are readily accepted as payment almost anywhere.
Driving
Traffic drives on the left. The main roads are paved and practicable all year round.
Health
Health facilities, hygiene and disease risk vary worldwide. You should take health advice about your specific needs as early as possible through either your general practitioner or a specialist clinic.
Language
The official language is English. The main other languages are Fijian and Hindustani.
Passport
We can advise passport and visa requirements only for British and Irish passport holders at the time of booking. For non-British passport holders and for British passports endorsed in any way, requirements should be checked with the nearest relevant embassy.
Shops
Open generally weekdays 8 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturdays until 1 p.m.
