Kenya shopping

Everywhere you'll be offered carved wooden animals, which are mass-produced. You may find some handsome modern sculpture in Nairobi or, if you are lucky, arabesque-patterned wood-carvings from the coastal island of Lamu and reproductions of old moulded plasterwork. In Mombasa, look for brass locks and carved camphorwood chests. Masai tribesmen sell spears and shields from roadside stands, but animal skins purchased without government permits are strictly illegal.

Fabrics-printed lengths of cotton and lovely silks-can be run up in a day by tailors whirring their sewing machines outside market stores. Men can have safari suits made to measure. There are also eye-catching beadwork bangles and necklaces.
