ITINERARY

Day 1: UK to Hanoi Depart from the UK on your overnight flight to Hanoi.

Day 2: Hanoi Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel. If you can’t wait to explore then you can head out and lose yourself in the alleys of the nearby Old Quarter. Or if you’d rather catch up on your sleep before sightseeing then there’s the option to book a day room. Later, enjoy a welcome cocktail and short introductory talk on Vietnam’s history at a local café before getting to know the rest of your group during a welcome dinner hosted by your tour leader. Stay: Sunway Hotel Hanoi, or similar. D.

Day 3: Hanoi Discover the main attractions of the capital during a full-day city tour. Make a stop in Ba Dinh Square, home to the mausoleum of the revolutionary leader, Ho Chi Minh, which you’ll view from the outside. You’ll also visit his former residence, the One Pillar Pagoda. Continue to the Temple of Literature which is home to the ‘Imperial Academy’ – Vietnam’s first national university, the Ethnology Museum, tranquil Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple which occupies a tiny island on the lake, as well as Tran Quoc Pagoda – the city’s oldest Buddhist temple.

Admire elegant French-colonial architecture during a cyclo ride through the narrow streets of the evocative Old Quarter which was once a thriving centre for craftsmen. This evening you can look forward to a traditional water puppet show. Stay: Sunway Hotel Hanoi, or similar. B.

Day 4: Hanoi to Halong Bay Today you’ll embark on an enchanting overnight cruise in Halong Bay – undoubtedly one of the highlights of your tour. Transfer to Halong City to board a traditional junk and enjoy a cruise around the beautiful limestone islands. Lunch is served on board as you drink in the spectacular natural beauty of the bay. Swim in the emerald waters and watch the sun set over the bay. Approx. journey time: 3½-4 hours. Stay: Pelican Cruise (Jan-Oct 2017) or Emeraude Cruise (Nov 2017-Dec 2018). B, L, D

Day 5: Halong Bay to Hué Enjoy brunch whilst cruising beautiful Halong Bay before disembarking and driving back to Hanoi. Take an evening flight to the former imperial capital of Hué (approx. 1¼ hours). Stay: Pilgrimage Village, or similar. BR.

Day 6: Hué Begin your exploration of this fascinating city with a morning cruise down the Perfume River. Visit the hilltop Thien Mu Pagoda and explore the Royal Tomb of King Minh Mang which has a serene lakeside setting surrounded by forest. You’ll also visit the magnificent UNESCO-listed Imperial Citadel – a vast complex of ornate temples, gates and bastions that was home to the Nguyen Dynasty from 1802 to 1945. Seek out some bargains at Dong Ba Market. Stay: Pilgrimage Village, or similar. B.

Day 7: Hué to Hoi An Journey from Hué to Danang across the scenic Hai Van Pass. En route visit the Cham Museum, Marble Mountains and beautiful Non Nuoc Beach. Continue to the UNESCO-listed city of Hoi An which offers the perfect combination of beach, city, culture and charm. Enjoy free time in the evening to unwind or explore the vibrant riverfront. Day 8: Hoi An Discover this charming, ancient city on a leisurely walking tour. Admire the striking architecture which blends Asian and French-colonial styles as you wander through the local market, discover the life of an 18th-Century merchant at the Old House of Tan Ky, cross the 400 year-old Japanese Covered Bridge and visit the Fujian Assembly Hall.

Soak up the atmosphere during lunch at a local restaurant and continue to My Son, the former capital of the Champa Kingdom and an incredible UNESCO Site housing dozens of red brick towers and temples which date from between the 7th and 13th centuries (approx. 1½ hours). Day 9: Hoi An to Buon Ma Thuot Enjoy a morning at leisure before returning to Danang for your afternoon flight to Buon Ma Thuot in the Central Highlands (approx. 1¼ hours). The city is renowned for its coffee plantations and surrounding hill tribe villages and you’ll begin your exploration of this lesser-known part of Vietnam with a visit to the local market. Stay: Saigon Ban Me, or similar. B, D.

Day 10: Buon Ma Thuot to Ho Chi Minh City Drive to nearby Lak Lake which is edged with traditional long houses on stilts. Experience a taste of rural Vietnam with a stroll through a local village, passing narrow paths, houses and rice fields while observing locals going about their daily lives. Continue to the ethnic minority village of Jun to experience a glimpse into the traditional life of the M’nong people. Glide across the serene waters of the lake in a dug-out canoe and stop for lunch in a local restaurant followed by a folk show with traditional gong music. This evening fly to Ho Chi Minh City (approx. 50 minutes) and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant. Stay:  Liberty Central Saigon Riverside Hotel, or similar. B, L, D.

Day 11: Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho Drive to Cai Be in the heart of the Mekong Delta for another highlight – a cruise on the mighty Mekong River and the chance to witness life on and around the water. Visit the craft village of Dong Hoa Hiep where beautifully-preserved 19th-Century houses are nestled in orchards. Enjoy an authentic local experience as you’re welcomed into a modest local home for lunch. Continue to Vinh Long to visit a bonsai garden and then on to Can Tho. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant. Day 12: Can Tho to Ho Chi Minh City Rise early to enjoy a Mekong River cruise and observe local life on the river as you glide past stilted homes on your way to the floating market. Drive back to Ho Chi Minh City and visit the Thien Hau Pagoda, Chinatown and the fascinating Binh Tay Market which sells everything from to street food, vegetables and seafood to jewellery, souvenirs and flowers. Day 13: Ho Chi Minh City Today you’ll visit the remarkable Cu Chi Tunnels – an immense network of tunnels that was used as a hiding area by Viet Cong guerrillas (approx. 1½ hours). This afternoon you can learn about Vietnam’s history during a half-day city tour. Discover the country’s turbulent past at the poignant War Remnants Museum and see the Reunification Palace and the Post Office.
