Texas in Detail:
Houston
The most famous attraction in the city is doubtless the Houston Space Centre, where you can handle real lunar rock or climb into a space capsule. Culture vultures will flock to the centre which boasts the second-biggest theatre district in the USA after Broadway and 18 top museums. Every March, this glitzy cultural metropolis becomes a genuine Wild West city with cowboys, ranchers and country stars gathering at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
Dallas
A shimmering skyline and supersize ego, football stars and television millionaires, this economic hub is also home to the largest artists’ district in urban USA as well as The Nasher Sculpture Center and the Dallas Museum of Art. The Sixth Floor Museum is a must for any history-lover for it was at this very spot that Lee Harvey Oswald fired the fatal shot at J. F. Kennedy. Dallas is also a shopper’s paradise and the city is full of excellent restaurants.
Fort Worth
A stroll through the Stockyards district is like walking onto the historical set of a Western. You can watch the daily herding of cattle along Main Street and stop by for a drink in a saloon - this is Texas as it was 100 years ago. Billy Bob’s Texas, the world’s largest honky tonk, gives you the chance to try your hand at bull-riding.
Austin
Seat of government in the Texas ‘Hill Country’, the state's charming capital is at the centre of the geographic heart and surrounded by rivers, meadows and vineyards. Students and politicians, music fans and friends of nature — they all come to Austin. The emblem of the city, the mighty dome of the Texas State Capitol, trumps its counterpart in Washington in terms of height. Almost 200 clubs Downtown showcase concerts of all music genres, and every night the city-owned bat colony under the Congress Avenue Bridge offers a unique spectacle as the inhabitants swarm out during the sunset to catch their prey. For even more wildlife, why not plan a stay on a guest ranch nearby and live like the cowboys.
San Antonio
Mariachi melodies, colourful lights and the aroma of tortillas and chilli, a stroll along the River Walk transports you right into Mexico with the pleasant shade of poplars and cypresses, galleries, boutiques and restaurants inviting you to linger awhile. Hispanic and Texan culture didn’t always mix so harmoniously and a walk on the Mission Trail leads past five Spanish missions originally founded to convert the Indians to Catholicism. Starting point of the footpath is The Alamo, the long-defended bastion in the Texan War of Independence and today a symbol across the country for the indomitable Texan spirit.
