Glossary of safari terms

Safari with Kuoni TravelAdventure: A safari is an adventure. You will be driving on unmade rough roads that are very dusty in dry weather and when it rains you can get stuck in the mud. There may be occasions when you need to help out, although we have some of the best driver/guides, the unforeseen can, (and does!) occur. But even if you do get stuck in some mud, help is usually not too far away.

Luggage: Individual luggage should be kept to a minimum and soft 'hold all' type bags used. On most safaris you can store your main luggage in your Nairobi, Arusha or coast hotel and collect it on your return from safari. Safaris involving travelling by light aircraft will have luggage restrictions. Baggage allowance is 15kgs per person (No refund will be given for unused vehicle costs).

Distances: On each safari we give the approximate mileage. Although on occasions due to weather conditions it may be necessary to use a different route due to heavy rains. On some safaris part of the itinerary is by air, although this increases the cost, it does reduce the travelling time between parks.

Routes: Changes in safari routings or lodges may occasionally be necessary. This can be caused by a shortage of lodge accommodation, bad road or weather conditions and vehicle breakdowns.

Families: We recommend families with children under 10 have their own safari vehicle – it’s very good value and ensures you don’t need to worry about your children disturbing others’ game viewing! Children under 7 years are not accepted on some safaris. See individual itineraries for restrictions.

Four wheel drive: Kuoni safaris in Tanzania, Botswana and South Africa are operated by 4x4 vehicles.

Single accommodation: This can be a problem on safari, in peak times sharing is often the only solution. If you book and pay for a single room and this happens, you will be refunded the difference.
