Grand Zambia
The Lower Zambezi National Park is one of our favourite safari locations for its sheer beauty and rewarding game viewing. Combined with South Luangwa National Park and Kafue National Parks, the result is an unequalled off the beaten track journey.
Our opinion
Experience Africa’s untamed wilderness.
Itinerary
- South Luangwa: 5 nights
- Lower Zambezi: 2 nights
- Kafue: 3 nights
Day 1 London/Lusaka/South Luangwe
Fly British Airways’ overnight from Heathrow to Lusaka. On arrival transfer by Zambian Airways light aircraft to the South Luangwa National Park for two nights at Nkwali Camp. Located on a private concession overlooking the national park, Nkwali is superb gameviewing country, with a beautiful area of ebony woodland and open grass plains. Elephant often cross the Luangwa River, seen from the bar, or come to the waterhole near the thatched dining room. The chalets are cool and spacious and overlook the river. Access to the park is through the main entrance over the bridge, by boat in front of the camp, or by the nearby pontoon. The area is famous for leopard and giraffe sightings.
Day 4 South Luangwa
Transfer to Nsefu or Tena Tena Camp (subject to availability) enjoying three nights within one of Africa’s most rewarding locations. Dubbed as one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, the Park hosts a wide variety of game, wildlife, birds and vegetation and is the home of the walking safari.
Day 7 South Luangwa/Lower Zambezi
Fly by Proflight light aircraft to the Lower Zambezi National Park for two nights at Chiawa Camp, on the banks of the Zambezi River. In the heart of big game country, the camp houses just eight luxury en suite tents, each on an elevated wooden deck, surveying the riverine habitat, where game is constantly coming down to feed and water.
Day 9 Lower Zambezi/Kafue
Depending on ground conditions fly by Sefofane light aircraft or travel overland (about four hours) to the northern reaches of the Kafue National Park, a mix of forest broken by open grass plains, and a particularly good habitat for sable, roan and hartebeest. Enjoy three nights at Busanga Bush Camp, a remote camp of just four tents and offering some of the best lion viewing in Africa, from day and night game drives.
Day 12 Kafue/Livingstone/Johannesburg/London
Fly to Livingstone by Sefofane light aircraft for your British Airways overnight flight to Heathrow via Johannesburg. Alternatively dust off the bush with three nights at Zambezi Sun before your British Airways flight home.
