One night that will fondly stay with me began by travelling via speedboat to a remote sandbank in the middle of the Indian Ocean, neighbouring Soneva Fushi. We were greeted by our dedicated waiter and chef and then sat on a private table surrounded by candles, twinkling stars and sounds of the ocean. A sumptuous barbecue dining experience had been prepared with fresh seafood caught that day accompanied by Champagne to toast our celebration moments after our engagement. In the Baa Atoll, approx. 35 minutes by seaplane from Malé. This is one of the largest islands covered by natural leafy vegetation.

Outstanding facilities include a sand floor restaurant, the unique Fresh in the Garden restaurant, the main restaurant - Ever Soneva So Down to Earth, By The Beach restaurant offering classic Japanese food with Korean influences and Bar(a)bara bar on the jetty. Beach barbecues can also be arranged. Equipped with a state-of-the-art telescope, the observatory in the organic garden offers a wonderful insight into the starlit night sky. Other facilities include the signature Six Senses Spa, Cinema Paradiso, boutique, CD and DVD library, The Den kids' club (opening October 2013), dive school and watersports.

Accommodation information

65 beach villas, each with air-conditioning, minibar, ceiling fan, CD/DVD player, part open-air bathroom with bath and shower.
Crusoe Villas (79m²) are two-storey villas with a terrace, separate sitting area with a private pool option available at a supplement.
Soneva Fushi Villas (96-126m²) are spacious individual villas also with a private pool option available at a supplement.
Spacious Soneva Suites (125-230m²) are also available.


Sustainable features

•   A carbon offset programme is funded by two per cent of every villa rental.

•   Six Senses’ innovative approach to sustainable tourism involves regular reviews of environmental practices whilst simultaneously working with local communities and charities to raise awareness.

•   0.5% of revenues are donated to local and global environmental and community projects.

•   The largest solar power plant in the Maldives provides half the resort’s electricity.

•   Rainwater is collected to improve the efficiency of the reverse-osmosis desalination plant, much of the resort’s ‘grey water’ is used to irrigate the organic gardens and swimming pools use filtered sea water.

•   Still and sparkling drinking water is produced on the island, reducing the use of plastic bottles.

•   A focus on sustainably produced items, including Fair Trade products, eco-friendly soaps and chemicals and overexploited resources and items with unnecessary packaging are avoided.

•   As much food and materials as possible are sourced locally and organic food production has also been developed at the resort.

•   Food waste, paper and cardboard is composted.

•   A resident marine biologist is employed to inform guests and staff about responsible behaviour in the reef environment.

•   Considerable stretches of the island's shorelines have been left undeveloped and unlit, so that turtles can continue to nest on the beaches.

•   Funded local schemes have included a careers fair, blood donation programme, and eye camps as well as donations to schools and hospitals.

•   Environmental awareness is actively promoted to guests, local communities and business partners.
•   All resort staff undertake Six Senses Mandatory Environmental Awareness training.
