(last updated 11/02/08 16.30)
KUONI POLICY
The following policy has been issued in line with the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) advice and the Federation of Tour Operators (FTO) and is in keeping with all other mainstream tour operators to Kenya.
Normal Booking conditions apply for clients travelling to Kenya.
Whilst the Foreign and Commonwealth Office do not advise against non essential travel to Kenya or Nairobi, they do advise that a number of areas in Kenya are experiencing violent unrest following the disputed presidential election result, and may be prone to further attacks. In light of this they do advise against all but essential travel to:
- Western and Nyanza Provinces; and the following districts of Rift Valley province – Nakuru (including Naivasha, Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha National Parks), Turkana Central, West Pokot, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gichu, Koibatek, Nandi, Kericho and Bome.
- The worst-affected areas of Nairobi, including all township or slum areas, which are experiencing constant tension and periodic, unpredictable violent unrest. The worst incidents have been seen in Kibera, Mathare, Huruma, Kariobangi, Kawangware, and Eastleigh. If you are in these areas you should remain indoors, exercise extreme caution and seek advice locally if you need to travel. There have also been incidents in the city centre, especially in and around Uhuru Park.
The following safari’s in our programme feature Nakuru or Navaisha and for this reason, the Kuoni Operations Department are pro-actively contacting clients due to travel on the following safaris on a week by week basis to offer a different itinerary. Safaris affected include: Cheetah Safari / Cheetah Serena / Cheetah Safari 3 / Wildlife Safari / Elephant Safari / Rhino Safari / Leopard Safari / Governors Safari.
In summary, holidays to Kenya continue to operate as normal, however, as a responsible Tour Operator we are very much aware that there may still be some clients who are still anxious about travelling. For any passengers due to travel to Kenya who require further information or help with their booking, please call the Kuoni Operations Team on 01306 742544.
Normal Booking conditions apply for all clients travelling to Tanzania and Zanzibar for all departures and itineraries. This includes itineraries that are transitting or overnighting in Kenya.
The Kuoni UK operations team, duty officer and local representatives in resort in conjunction with the Federation of Tour Operators (FTO) are continually monitoring the situation and will provide updates on an on-going basis in line with the Foreign Office advice.
For clients due to travel to Kenya imminently, please call the Kuoni Operations Team on 01306 742544.

UPDATE FOLLOWING KENYA ELECTIONS (16)
(last updated 29/01/08 16.15)
The following policy has been issued in line with the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) advice (see update below) and the Federation of Tour Operators (FTO) and is in keeping with all other mainstream tour operators to Kenya.
Given the current situation in the country, Kuoni is offering free of charge amendments and free cancellations for passengers due to travel to Kenya up to and including Monday 4th February 2008. This situation is being reviewed on an ongoing basis and updates will be made accordingly.
The Kuoni Operations department is contacting passengers travelling up to and including 4th February 2008. Should clients still wish to continue with their travel plans to Kenya, every effort will be made to offer alternative itineraries for clients avoiding Nairobi and other areas that the Foreign Office advise against travel to.
Should clients wish to rebook holidays to alternative destinations, holidays can be amended at the relevant costs or cancelled with a full refund of monies where this is not possible.
Flights to Kenya are still being operated by all scheduled carriers, but the Kuoni charter flight (operated by Monarch) to Mombasa, has not been operating to date in 2008 and is currently cancelled until the end of April 2008.
For clients due to travel to Kenya imminently, please call the Kuoni Operations Team on 01306 742544.
The Kuoni UK operations team, duty officer and local representatives in resort in conjunction with the Federation of Tour Operators (FTO) are continually monitoring the situation and will provide updates on an on-going basis in line with the Foreign Office advice.
The current Foreign & Commonwealth Office (www.fco.gov.uk) is as follows:
- A number of areas of Kenya are experiencing violent unrest following the disputed presidential election result and may be prone to further outbreaks. The security and political situation in the country remains unpredictable. We are working closely with the Kenyan authorities and are doing what we can to ensure that as many British nationals as possible across the country are aware of our travel advice and British High Commission contact details. The British High Commission have re-opened their emergency line. The emergency numbers are 00 254 20 2844 660/661/662/663/664/665/666. See the Local Travel section of this advice for more details.
- We advise against all travel to the Nakuru (including the National Park) and Naivasha (including Lake Naivasha) region due to the escalation of violence there. If you are in these areas you should remain indoors. A curfew has been imposed in Nakuru town and its environs between 1900 and 0700 (local time).
- We advise against all but essential travel to: Western and Nyanza Provinces and Mombasa town; the following districts of Rift Valley province - Turkana Central, West Pokot, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gichu, Koibatek, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet and Narok district north of and including the town of Narok; and the following areas of Nairobi - Mathare, Huruma, Kariobangi, Kawangware and Eastleigh, its central business district and Uhuru Park. If you are in these areas you should remain indoors, exercise extreme caution and seek advice locally if you need to travel.
- On 29 January, there have been reports of mobs gathering and violent clashes in parts of Nairobi. Tensions are high and the worst affected areas are Kibera, Embakasi, Kawangware, Ngong Road and Naivasha Road. There are also reports of crowds gathering, but no reports of violence, in the Mathare and Eastlands areas but the situation remains fluid and may change quickly. You should monitor local media for developments, avoid areas where there are large gatherings of people and, if you need to travel, exercise extreme caution when travelling around the city.
- You should avoid all public gatherings and large public meetings. Any rallies, even if advertised as peaceful, could potentially turn violent. If you are currently in Kenya you should exercise extreme caution and seek advice locally either from your tour operator or the local authorities, particularly if you need to travel.

- Although the situation is calmer today it remains volatile. There are reports that daily mass gatherings are being planned for Nairobi and other urban areas. Such gatherings could potentially turn violent. You should avoid all public gatherings and large public meetings.
- We are aware of reports that some tour operators are cancelling forthcoming holidays to Kenya. You should contact your tour operator for confirmation of this. International flights continue to operate but you should check with your airline before travelling to the airport.
- If you are currently in Kenya you should exercise extreme caution and seek advice locally either from your tour operator or the local authorities, particularly if you need to travel.

UPDATE FOLLOWING KENYA ELECTIONS (2)
(last updated 02/01/08 14.00)
Following the elections in Kenya on 27 December, tensions are high but under control.
Clients in resort have been contacted and are safe and well and are remaining within their hotels as all local excursions have been cancelled for the time being. All vehicles leaving and travelling to the airport are being accompanied by police escorts and clients are being advised of this accordingly.
The Foreign Office advice update:
- British High Commission officials continue to monitor the situation and travel advice will be updated at regular intervals. We are working closely with the Kenyan authorities and are in touch with British nationals across the country.
- We advise against all but essential travel to the urban centres of Kisumu, Kakamega, Kericho, Eldoret; to the Kisauni, Likoni and Tiwi areas around Mombasa; and to rural areas between Nakuru and Eldoret and around Kericho in the Rift Valley. We also advise against all but essential travel to Nairobi city centre, Uhuru Park and the Kibera, Mathare, and Eastleigh areas of Nairobi.
- We recommend that you stay indoors. If you need to travel, including to an airport, you should exercise extreme caution and seek advice locally either from your tour operator or the local Kenyan authorities.
- There continues to be serious unrest in parts of Kenya, particularly in urban centres, following the announcement of the presidential election results. There are reports of sporadic violent clashes in the countryside between Eldoret and Nakuru and around Kericho. There are also reports of rioting in Naivasha, particularly in the Kabati slum area. Militia activity, including killings, has been reported around Eldoret. Around 200 Kenyan nationals are reported to have been killed in the disturbances.
- National security forces have been deployed across the country to the main trouble spots. There is a heavy police presence in central Nairobi. Tour operators in the Mombassa area are working with the Tourist Police Unit who are providing escorts to and from Moi International Airport for tour groups. A 6pm to 6am curfew has been imposed in Kisumu town. The situation is fluid and we are updating our travel advice regularly.
