Macau holidays
A unique blend of Portuguese and Chinese cultures, architecture, ideals and cuisine, nowhere else in the world is quite like Macau. A former Portuguese colony nestled on a tiny Chinese peninsula where cobbled narrow streets are lined with ornate pastel coloured baroque buildings, Macau's Old Town enjoys a pace of life in the very much more Mediterranean than South China Sea.
Macau holiday highlights
- Macau is swiftly becoming the ‘Las Vegas’ of the east, fuelled by the Chinese obsession with gambling. One by one the large hotel and casino complexes from Las Vegas are moving in, eager to take up a slice of this very lucrative business. For Vegas style glitz and glamour head to one of these new hotels, for example The Venetian.
- Macau is a gourmet’s paradise attracting a worldwide eclectic mix of cuisine. In general Macanese dishes borrow from Chinese, African and Indian cuisine, linked by a common Portuguese heritage. Many tasty seafood dishes abound, try the spicy prawns, Macanese sole or divine dim sum.
The enclave of Macau is split into three small, distinct but rapidly merging areas, with the three islands of Macau Peninsula, Taipa and Coloane now more integrated following a hard reclamation project. The city of Macau itself is located in the north, attached to the mainland of China by a thin strip of land. Here you will find most of the city’s attractions, restaurants and bars, plus many of the casinos for which Macau is now renowned. South of the peninsula are the two additional areas of Taipa and Coloane. Like the city of Macau itself, both areas are compact and easily managed on foot, although navigation between them is best managed by bus or taxi.
