Alaska
Is it the majestic mountains, the sparkling lakes, the mighty glaciers, or the abundant wildlife that draw people to Alaska? Travelling in Alaska is like travelling no other place on earth.
The largest state in the USA is a land of superlatives; its sheer scale and wild, natural beauty overwhelm the senses like few other places on Earth. Covering an area greater in size than England, France, Spain and Italy combined, it is a fifth of the size of the USA with 17 of it’s 20 highest mountains, it’s third longest river, 5,000 glaciers (including one as big as Switzerland!) and vast areas of back country and natural wilderness to explore.
Alaska holiday highlights
- Choose from wildlife viewing, sea kayaking and guided glacier hikes.
- Relax aboard a one-day cruise, pan for gold or bait a rod for Alaska’s world famous King salmon fishing. Visit Talkeetna a picturesque, laid back hamlet that was the inspiration for the television series ‘Northern Exposure’ and perhaps best matches the fantasies of what Alaskan town life must be like.
- Explore Alaska's 84,375 sq miles of administered national parks, preserves and monuments, including Katmai, one of the best places in the world to see grizzly bears, up close, in their natural habitat. Just one of these parks is Denali National Park, home to much wildlife, including bears, wolves, arctic foxes, many bird species and of course the awesome Mount Mckinley.
- Journey to the scenic town of Seward, a picturesque gateway to the Kenai Fjords National Park. The whole area is a wilderness wonderland and can be reached, from Anchorage by car; a 2½ hour journey on one of the most scenic highways in the country, or by train, a journey complete with glaciers, steep gorges and rugged mountain scenery.
