Treasures Of Taiwan

Treasures Of Taiwan holiday

The treasures of Taiwan in one fascinating tour of discovery.

Our opinion

A compelling seven night tour of this remarkably scenic island begins in bustling, modern Taipei and leads on to the most naturally breathtaking regions of this leaf shaped island. Discover natural lakes, dramatic gorges, soaring cliffs and natural hot springs. Relax also at in the calming surrounds of the Foguangshan Monastery, where an opportunity to rise early and chant with the monks is an experience not to be missed.

  • Sun Moon Lake: 1 night
  • Foguangshan: 1 night
  • Chihpen: 1 night
  • Taroko: 1 night
  • Taipei: 1 night

Day 1 London/Taipei

Depart Heathrow on your overnight Eva Air flight arriving in Taiwan’s bustling capital Taipei. You will be met and transferred to the Howard Plaza or similar where you will spend two nights. The remainder of your first day is at leisure to explore this fascinating city. On your second day join a half day tour that begins at the National Palace Museum, home to the biggest collection of Chinese art and antiquities in the world. Continue on to the Martyrs’ Shrine, a memorial to the 330,000 men who lost their lives in previous battles and Pao-an Temple dedicated to Paosheng Tati, the God of Medicine. The God was first brought to Taiwan by immigrants of Tungan County in mainland China's Fukien Province from the original temple in Paichueh County. Construction of the temple in Taipei began in 1805 and was completed in 1830. The rest of the day is at your leisure.

Day 4 taipei/Sun Moon Lake

Today leave the capital behind and head to the breathtaking Sun Moon Lake, south of Taipei. Enjoy the panoramic scenery en route as you pass by mountains and small provincial towns. Known as the ‘Pearl of Taiwan’, Sun Moon Lake is famed for its beauty. Its name derives from the eastern section of the lake being round like the sun and the west side like the crescent of the moon. On arrival, visit the Wen Wu Temple and the Tse-En Pagoda which towers 150 feet above the lake, the climb to the top offers rewarding views. Overnight at The Richforest (formerly Lingo Resort) or similar.

Day 5 Sun Moon Lake/Foguangshan

This morning head further south on your journey to Tainan on the island’s western seaboard. Drive through the lowlands of Tainan County and on arrival enjoy a short tour of this quaint coastal city, stopping at the Chikan Tower. Originally built by the Dutch in 1653 this structure has been many things to many Dynasties over the years including a military hospital and a Chinese general’s mansion. Visit the famous fort of Anping built in 1662 in honour of the pirate warrior Koxinga, the only Fuchou temple in Taiwan. Continue to Foguangshan Monastery (Guesthouse accommodation) for your overnight stay. A brief tour of the Monastery is included on arrival.

Day 6 Foguangshan/Chihpen

You can choose to wake early this morning to join the monks in their morning ritual including chanting and a short meditation course. Alternatively wander the calming grounds and surrounds of the Monastery. Later journey to Chihpen, found just south of Taitung. The area is famous for its hot springs and the rest of the day is at leisure for you to enjoy them. Overnight at the Hoya Chihpen hotel or similar.

Day 7 Chihpen/Taroko

Continue your journey north along the east coast, marvel at the rock formations and visit the caves of the Eight Immortals, formed millions of years ago by erosion from the sea. Also enjoy time at Bachi, a scenic lookout for panoramic views of the area. Continue onto Taroko National Park arriving late afternoon, staying at the Grand Formosa.

Day 8 Taroko/Taipei

Spend this morning exploring the National Park; visit the Tunnel of Nine Turns, Swallow Grotto, Eternal Spring Shrine and Taroko Gorge Gateway. The scenic wonders of this geological wonderland will inspire you. Later return to Taipei along the Su-Hua highway arriving early evening and stay at the Howard Plaza or similar

Day 9 Taipei/London
