Lying in the north west of Cambodia, Siem Reap is quite rightly best known for being the gateway to Angkor. This once sleepy town has benefited from its proximity to the ancient sites and is now the fastest growing city in the country. The town itself has a good selection of shops and restaurants. Travel further within the province and you will find the fascinating Khmer ruins of Beng Mealea and Bantaey Srei.
Angkor highlights
- The incomparable, moated mausoleum-temple of Angkor Wat, once dedicated to the Hindu God Vishnu, now a peaceful Buddhist complex. Its imposing lotus towers, elegant courtyards and intricate carvings represent the height of inspiration and perfection in Khmer art and architecture.
- The gigantic walled city of Angkor Thom, with the chaotic but endearing temple of Bayon at its heart, where gigantic faces smile down at you from every tower.
- The peaceful and exquisitely decorated temple Preah Khan and the magical ruined temple-monastery Ta Phrom, being slowly reclaimed by the jungle.
The best times of day to visit the Angkor temples are either late afternoon or early in the morning to avoid the midday heat with sunrise or sunset being particular favourites. Although it is possible to travel to Angkor independently an informative guide is invaluable.
