Siena
Draped on its hills, Siena is a mediaeval city where traditions are still alive. A colourful ensemble of mediaeval buildings, cobbled streets and elegant piazzas steeped in history. On the lower slopes, gardens and olive groves fill almost half the space within the old city walls.
Siena holiday highlights
- Siena’s principal sights are clustered in the maze of narrow streets and alleys around the fan-shaped Piazza del Campo, one of Europe’s great mediaeval squares. The piazza sits at the heart of the city’s seventeen ‘contrade’, a series of parishes whose ancient rivalries are still acted twice-yearly Palio, the famous, lively, bareback horse race.
- Cafés, restaurants and boutiques line the Campo’s fringes, dominated by Palazzo Publico and Torre del Mangia. This imposing ensemble tends to overshadow the little Fonte Gaia on the piazza’s northern edge.
- Apart from its cultural heritage, Siena’s hilly position also means that city walks offer delightful hidden corners and countless sudden views.
