Lake Orta
Orta, a small mountainous lake is surrounded by lush woodlands. Unlike the other larger lakes, its idyllic little island and villages are quieter and boast authenticity, with their cream-coloured houses with thick slate tiles arranged like a display of biscuits and unforgettable views of the island, Isola San Giulio, lit up at night like a cruise liner. Located in the Piedmont region, is one of Italy’s least visited lakes, unjustly so, as it is delightful set among the foothills of the Alps.
Lake Orta highlights
- The Lake’s main resort is Orta San Giulio, a charming little town with historical centre containing handsome palazzi, and decorated houses with wrought iron balconies, the bustling Piazza Principale, the church of Santa Maria Assunta, Sacro Monte and the Picturesque Isola San Giulio.
- Tour the unique vineyards of Piedmont, the land of the celebrated Barbera d’Asti D.O.C. red wine and the equally notorious Barolo d’Alba. A day touring these vineyards is a must to sample some of these prestigious vines, nibble on some local canapés and purchase wine at very affordable prices.
- There are also many hiking paths near Lake Orta. These lead up to the summit of Mount Mazzocone and to the panoramic trails of Val Grande National Park (Parco Nazionale Val Grande), the largest wilderness area in Italy.
