Lake Iseo

Dominated on the east by Mount Gugliemo and known to the Romans as Lacus Sebinus, Iseo is one of the most beautiful alpine lakes and an interesting little town, covered with dense chestnut forests, prehistoric carving sites and natural thermal spas. Flanked by the notorious wine producing region of Franciacorta, Iseo is also best known for its dry Spumante metodo champenois.

Lake Iseo holiday highlights

  • Located in the Lombardy region, it is a glaciated lake of incomparable beauty. One of its biggest attractions is Monte Isola, the largest inland lake island in Europe. Easily reached by ferry, it is traffic free and ideal for walking or cycling. Reaching the Pyramids of Zone on the island, you will be able to see very high pinnacles, created by glacier deposit erosions.
  • On the western lakeshore are the bogns of Castro and Zorino, sheets of limestone that plunge into the lake.
  • North of the lake in Val Camino you can see hundreds of prehistoric rock carvings at the National Park of Rock Engravings. Once you have visited the lakes main attraction, take a day trip to the beautiful city of Bergamo, a former outpost of the Venetian empire, which boasts a wealth of medieval, Renaissance and baroque architecture.
  • To the south is Franciacorta, the area where the renowned sparkling wine is produced.
