Capri

Unquestionably, the islands in the Bay of Naples, Capri and Ischia are the holiday princesses of the Italian islands. Idyllic, rugged Capri with its shimmering blue Grotto and cliffs that descend rapidly down to the sea. Its main town, visited by many a famous celebrity, is ablaze with alleyways and trendy squares, and full of jewellery shops and designer boutiques.

Only a mere three miles or an hour by ferry from the mainland, Capri has been inhabited since prehistoric times. During Roman times Augustus retreated to the island to escape from the Roman senate, later Tiberius moved the imperial capital here. As you approach the island, you get lovely views of the town of Capri and the dramatic slopes of Monte Solaro.

Capri holiday highlights

Stroll from the Marina Grande harbour to the funicular station and take a ride up to the town of Capri, the main village nestled between its two mountains.
Stop in Piazza Umberto I at one of the cafés for a refreshing aperitif and some people watching, before hiking up to the blossoming Gardens of Augustus, where you can admire the views of the jagged towering lime stones “I Faraglioni”. Capri town can get quite busy during the day in high season especially August, but when the day trippers have gone, you can feel really privileged to be staying here.
Visit the old monastery Certosa San Giacomo. For wonderful views, take a bus ride to Anacapri in the west and after visiting Villa Jovis and Villa San Michele hop on a chair lift up to Monte Solaro, the views of Capri from this height are breathtaking.
Visit Capri’s rough coast which is studded with more than a dozen sea caves, most of them accessible but none as stunning as the Blue Grotto or “Grotta Azzurra”.
