Aeolian Islands

Forming a volcanic archipelago off Sicily’s northern coast are the seductive Aeolian Islands. These seven beautiful islands, were formed a million years ago following a succession of volcanic explosions. Named after Aeolus, the Greek god of winds, the Islands were of strategic importance to the Greeks, who consequently settled on Lipari, the main island, in 580 BC. Years of invasions and colonisations have added great character to the Islands.

Whether you want to enjoy the history and beauty of just one island, explore the entire Archipelago or combine your stay with Sicily, you will be sure to be enchanted by a visit to the Aeolian Islands.

Aeolian Islands holiday highlights

  • Over the years, the rich volcanic soil has fostered a wilderness of plants as well as an abundance of sea life. Creating extraordinary landscapes; Silvery grey pumice, verdant slopes and vast bleak areas alongside beautiful fertile terraces, rust coloured mountains and steep hills ploughed through by torrents of lava.
  • Black pebble beaches, clear cobalt waters teeming with fish, sea breezes and mountains swathed in flowers, steaming craters and natural therapeutic hot mudbaths.
  • Each of the seven islands has its own incomparable beauty and contrasting character, the largest of which is Lipari.
  • Aeolian cuisine is refreshingly simple, using fresh local ingredients; perhaps sample fresh fish simply grilled with herbs, and enjoy a glass of sweet dessert wine Passito.
