Verona
Verona is located on the flat landscape of the Veneto plain, dramatically neighbouring the spectacular Dolomite Mountains and Lake Garda. It is the second biggest city in the Veneto region and the most prosperous in northern Italy.
Favoured by the Romans in 89BC, Verona was once called “piccola Roma” (little Rome). The relatively small and vibrant city is now a wonderful blend of ancient history, inspirational music, classical wines and wonderful shops, yet there is so much more to do wandering amongst the cobbled streets.
Verona holiday highlights
- Since the days of the Roman Empire, Piazza delle Erbe has been the centre of Verona. It is here that many of the city’s fine palazzi, built from the local pink limestone, churches and monuments are located.
- A city of music and romance, Verona will be eternally linked with Shakespeare’s star crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet, and not far from the Piazza you will find Juliet's famous balcony.
- At night you may hear reverberating music from the famous Roman amphitheatre, which dating from 30AD amphitheatre is the third largest in existence. Seating around twenty thousand people, the ancient amphitheatre lures opera enthusiasts from all over the world, particularly during July and August when it hosts an international annual opera festival.
- Verona is also an excellent base for exploring Lake Garda and even Venice.
