Fiesole
Fiesole stands in rolling hilly countryside five miles north of Florence. Idyllically located amidst olive groves, it is a popular retreat thanks to its high position which attracts cool breezes. Founded in the 7th century BC, the original Etruscan colony was a powerful force in central Italy, only surrendering its supremacy after the foundation of Florence.
Fiesole holiday highlights
- Not much is left of Etruscan or Roman Fiesole, but one can still visit the Teatro Romano, and the archaeological area, on the hillside, where scanty remains of baths and temples can be found.
- Though rich in beautiful churches and works of art, by thier favourite son and sculptor, Mino da Fiesole, perhaps the best sights Fiesole has to offer are the picture perfect view over Florence, and the surrounding area from old streets like Via Francesco on the edge of town.
