Kuoni has launched an ambitious project to conserve coral reefs and assess the impact of global warming in the Maldives.

The travel giant has joined hands with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and environment advice firm Seamarc to support the scheme, which aims to preserve the resorts' housereefs. The coral reefs are currently being protected by law from all fishing activities apart from bait fishing.

Matthias Leisinger, Kuoni's head of corporate responsibility, unveiled the project in Male.

Coral reefs are a major attraction for backpackers who fly to the Maldives to spend their luxury holidays.

Though most of the coral islands are marine protected zones, most resorts do not employ marine biologists to manage the housereef and prevent destructive activities.

Under the new plan, four resorts will trial a marine protected area management plan, which involve ecologicial studies and deployment of a warden to keep away intruders.

Resort staff and local communities will be given training in a bid to create awareness about the need to conserve coral reefs.

Kuoni has conducted a similar project in Egypt, targeting the Red Sea.
