Luxury holiday destination Thailand plans to expand airport capacity at
Phuket International Airport, allowing more tourists the opportunity to
visit its exotic beaches.
Thailand holidays have been in high demand in recent years and the Thai
government has moved quickly to upgrade its transport infrastructure.
Early plans suggest an expansion of the runway by 700 metres to allow
new superjumbo aeroplanes to land at the airport. Plans are also being
set out to enlarge and modernise the terminal to cope with the expected
rise in passenger numbers.
Phuket International Airport hopes to be able to receive up to 12.5
million visitors each year once work to the site is finished in 2014.
Arrangements were made in 2008 for an expansion on the island but the
logistics associated with the project delayed it. Now the plans look set
to go ahead giving more holidaymakers the chance to relax on a beach
holiday to the South-East Asian hot-spot.
