Melbourne has overtaken Sydney in a poll rating the best places to visit
in Australia.

The Victorian city won the coveted title of 'Best City in Australia' at
the inaugural of Australian Traveller Magazine Reader Awards held in
rival Sydney.

Australian Traveller questioned 1,000 people and placed Melbourne at the
top for its cultural buzz such as sporting events, food festivals,
shopping and hanging out in its hidden laneway bars and cafes.

Destination Melbourne Chief Executive, Chris Buckingham said the people
of Melbourne would be contented to know that the city has gained the top
position after being considered as Australia's second city behind Sydney
for a long time.

Mr Buckingham added: "People like coming to Melbourne because we are a
welcoming destination that celebrates cool and accepts difference."
