Holidaymakers travelling to the luxury destination of Dubai could be in for a surprise when they arrive to empty roads as the emirate marks Car Free Day.

The globally recognised day was first launched by Dubai and since then January 18 has been marked as a day to do without your vehicle. It was initially created to encourage people to be responsible when it comes to emissions and the environment and to cut down on the number of vehicles out on the road.

While Car Free Day has been increasing in popularity in recent years, so haveDubai holidays. The Emirate is now a favoured spot for luxury getaways and is the preferred destination for many sport stars and celebrities.

Hussain Nasser Lootah is the director general of Dubai Municipality. He said he expects this year to achieve more environmental benefits from the initiative due to increased cooperation and effort among government departments and heightened awareness among local communities.

So tourists to Dubai can expect a quiet and peaceful transfer from the airport to their hotel as the Emirate's motorists take the day off.
