Travellers planning USA holidays will have the opportunity to enjoy a new museum at
the Brooklyn Navy Yard that will showcase the site's military
significance in American history.
The 300-acre site in a corner of New York City has been off-limits to
the general public for centuries but will welcome visitors starting on
Veterans Day, November 11.
Andrew Kimball, president of the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development
Corporation said: "People have lived in the surrounding communities
their whole lives and never been behind the gates of the Brooklyn Navy
Yard.
"Literally for the first time since 1801, we are opening up our gates."
An enormous anchor weighing 22,000lb from the USS Austin - one of the
last ships built on the yard - and a wind-solar street lamp are the
first yard-manufactured artefacts visitors will see upon entering the
glass atrium lobby.
Following its opening on Friday, the museum will be open Wednesdays to
Sundays, and admission will be free
