Artificial reefs to be created off Dubai's coast by leading property
developer Nakheel could encourage more tourists to take Dubai holidays.
The company said its latest human-made reef project is aimed at
enhancing marine fisheries resources and providing high relief,
hard-bottom habitat in open seabed areas.
Nakheel's decision to create 500 artificial reefs follows the loss of
traditional fishing grounds, caused by the building of the Palm Jumeirah
and other developments along the Dubai coastline.
Ali Rashid Lootah, chairman of Nakheel, said: "This project will not be
a big financial burden as most of the materials are with us."
An increasing number of tourists may be considering going on luxury
holidays to Dubai over the coming weeks, with the emirate topping a poll
carried out by holiday property rental firm Campaya to find the most
popular destination for travellers seeking sunshine during the winter
months.
