Tourists planning to go on all-inclusive holidays to the USA may be interested in including the 9/11 memorial at ground zero, New York, on their itinerary after the site opened to the public for the first time on Monday.

The memorial is a tribute to almost 3,000 people killed in terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and the 1993 trade centre bombing.

The victim's names are inscribed on bronze plates that surround huge square fountains on the exact spots where the twin towers of the World Trade Centre stood.

The memorial takes visitors through a grove of hundreds of white oak trees to the fountains.

It was visited by victims' families on Sunday.

While visitors are allowed free entry, online registration is required to enter the eight-acre memorial plaza.

Almost 7,000 people registered for visiting the site on the opening day, while nearly 400,000 have signed up for the coming months.

A maximum of nearly 1,500 visitors will be allowed to enter the site at a time.
