The great white continent - the ultimate frontier of Southern Hemisphere exploration where no human lives permanently and very few have ventured to.
Endless discoveries, surprises at every turn, shimmering ice and snow reflecting the sun of the apparently endless days and your time and schedule dependent on nature’s good will – this is Antarctica.
Antarctica Holiday Highlights
• Cruise through this icy landscape aboard the Antarctica XXI, which navigates frozen seas and lands on an adventurous expedition.
• Spot a magical array of wildlife, including the easily recognisable Emperor penguin; large pods of minke and humpback whales feeding in nutrient-rich waters; elephant, fur and leopard seals; and seabirds such as albatrosses, turns, shags and petrels.
Antarctica - The Essentials
• The average summer temperature in Antarctica is -7 degrees centigrade, while the average temperature in the South Shetland Islands is 1.5 degrees centigrade. It will always be cold.
• Like the rest of Antarctica, the South Shetland Islands' sovereignty is unrecognised and undisputed under the Antarctic Treaty System, but they have been claimed in the past by the United Kingdom, Chile and Argentina.
• No military action is permitted on Antarctica, another stipulation set out by the treaty.
Random Fact
Antarctica is unique for many reasons both naturally and culturally, one of which is the fact that it has no official government. This huge expanse of land is owned by no other country, has no native population and is ruled by the Antarctic Treaty System. Amongst other regulations the treaty states that this remote continent can be claimed by no nation and it is a scientific preserve that allows the freedom of scientific investigations by any country.
