The vibrant Palo de Mayo dance is a unique mixture of European culture and Afro Caribbean traditions performed throughout Nicaragua, Belize and Honduras in the month of May. Originating in Jamaica via Bluefields, Nicaragua, this sensual dance takes place around a maypole with colourful ribbons and marks the celebration of welcoming the rains and new life as well as honouring Mayaya, the African goddess of fertility.
