Destination introduction

Grindelwald holidays equal pure Alpine air, breathtaking scenery, permanently snow-capped mountains and plenty of shops. This popular, busy and beautiful resort is also known as the 'Glacier Village' and is located in a sheltered valley overshadowed by the Wetterhorn, Schreckhorn and the north face of Eiger. The glaciers here are incredibly accessible and extend deep into the valley. Set at 3,335 feet, Grindelwald is home to a six-seater gondola that will take you up to First, and also the romantic Glacier Gorge and the mystical Blue Ice Grotto. The region is rich in traditional folklore and abundant in music and mountain festivities and hiking and mountain paths.

•   Take the cogwheel train to the ultimate destination, Jungfraujoch, for incredible views from the highest altitude observation terrace, standing at 11 700 feet.
•   Glacier Gorge (open end of May to October) is a wildly romantic, thunderous gorge with glacial mills and stirations and pink and green marble blocks.

Sports

Winter hiking, snowshoe walking, and Grindelwald is home to the Europe’s longest sledge run (15km) from Faulhorn. For an alternative to snow sports, Grindelwald has a superb indoor sports centre with pool, large ice rink, fitness centre, bowling and a cinema. The Jungfrau Activ pass is ideal for non-skiers looking to explore the mountains and experience the best of the region. Please enquire for prices and details.

Excursions

A must from Grindelwald is the journey to the Jungfraujoch, the Top of Europe, with a visit to the incredible ice palace and Schilthorn-Piz Gloria - an impressive revolving restaurant with the most spectacular 360º panorama in the Alps. Perhaps take an exciting helicopter trip from Lauterbrunnen over the Alps and view the awesome Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. There is no better way to see the mountains than by helicopter, an adventure you will never forget. 25 minute flight £166 per person (minimum 4 people).
